dasbrick
Like most of our MJs, my bolts are stubborn. What ways have other people done to remove a bed that is probably going to scrap. Could I cut the bed open top side and just kill the bolts that way?
mjtjnj
You could. You might be surprised that the bolts/studs aren't that bad. I knew mine was going to scrap, so I just put an impact wrench on them and broke some, others came off. No wd40, no nothin! Only 2 broke, the others came out. My 87 had bolts, the 86 replacement bed used studs, and the boneyard only lost one stud.
88pioneer
I got the bolts closer to the cab off, and then jacked that part of the bed up. I was able to cut between the bed and the frame an got the other 2 by the cross member. Then i went through the top of the bed to get the last 2. Needless to say, the bed was scrap
jimoshel
Sounds like much ado about nothing. If it's going to the scrap yard whats the problem? Place a socket on the bolt head, turn. If the bolt comes out in one piece nice. If it twists off, so what. I removed a bed I want to salvage and put back on. 6 of the bolt heads twisted off. Ive been soaking the stubs in rust penetrating for 3 weeks now and still can't budge them.
88pioneer
My problem was most of my bolt heads rounded off :fs1:
jimoshel
Try a stud remover. It works like a ezy out only it grips the outside of the stud instead of drilling a hole and inserting the ezee out.
dasbrick
What could I replace the studs and such with? Anyone got a measurement for the bolts? 1/4" coarse? M8 x 4?
