bkdrocks Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Will the transmission work?It has a 242 transfer case?I don't know anything about those..... I can get my hands on a TCU but are the plugs on the trans the same and the harness in my MJ???
Wildman Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Yes!, :thumbsup: , you can use your TCU, Should be. Is this a direct replacement for your AW4??? (Don't tell me this is a complete conversion :roll: ) The only thing you need to swap over is the speedometer quill from your old transfer case. There have been a couple write ups on that just a few weeks ago. Oh, and you need to change the shifter gate to the 242, but you could still use the 231 shifter, and the linkage will be the same.

I would like to have an automatic off road....So I'm considering it. AX15 would be an easier swap ... Shifter gate on the 242 is different? I need to hit the JY and find a donor for the rest of the parts.
JeepcoMJ Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 the torque converter bolt holes won't line up. you'll have to redrill your flex plate, or use a renix era torque converter.

JeepcoMJ Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 yep. the other thing is that any aw4 fron 1991 on up is 23 spline output, and the ax15's all were as well. renix era aw4, and ba10/5 were only 21 spline outputs...so, if that's what you have, you'll either need a new tcase, or a new input shaft.

JeepcoMJ Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 :doh: Yea.......I forgot about the torque converter :oops: ...yeah, I rebuilt and installed a 4.0 motor in a '95 xj once, with the proper '95 flexplate...and realized that, once I had motor in, the torque converter wouldn't bolt up...because some yahoo used a 93 motor in it with a 93 torque converter before then. there are several different torque converters ranging through the years.
