pug
I have a 1998 231 4.0 ax15. When i turn or start to take off there is a clicking sound. I thought it was the axel joint or hub assembly so i replaced. Took out for test drive same clicking noise. Put transfercase in 4 high clicking noise was gone. Any ideas of what it could be. thanks

In 4wd the front wheels would pull and releive the pressure on the rear drive line and it wouldn't make the noise. To be honest with you, I would find it hard to believe it is the TC but stranger things have happened. I would ASSUME there is something else going on. Geonovast
Remove the front driveshaft and take it for a drive to see how it acts then.

Wildman
I assume you meant to say a........1989??? Yes, remove the front drive shaft, and check the section of the shaft where it slides together, I also have a "clicking" noise from that slide section being worn, the problem is......it's not re-build-able, only replaceable :( When I go into 4wd, the "clicking" noise goes away, from the pressure on the drive shaft.
