codybutz
I'm going to look at a xj. it would be a dd for my girl that has no car this winter. its a 1998 4 door 4x4 with 56,000 original miles on the clock. it has an auto trans, here is the catch tho the guy said it has no reverse. he said his mechanic said something about it being a like a $400 job for him to fix, maybe a solenoid he was saying. now here is my question would this be something to go look at and what else should i look for? is this a sign of bigger problems? if i were to buy the jeep i have no problem dropping the trans and fixing what ever it would be. but i just don't wanna buy it fix that and then have that be the start of many more head aches. the guy is only asking like 1600 for it. is this worth it and what else should i look for? any help would be great thanks guys. - cody I know this is a mj site, but it also seems to be more helpful then some of the other forums i belong to. thanx again guys. Automan2164
Go for it... Even a JU trans is only a couple hundred... and with CFC, theres a butt-ton. Even cheaper if you can find an LKQ junkyard @ $90 for a trans. Rob L.
Eagle
Don't think it's a solenoid. The AW-4 does have solenoids for controllers, but if you pull the fuse for the TCU it should still shift manually -- just won't have second gear. The '98 I think doesn't have a separate TCU, I think in '97 they went to a combined PCU (Powertrain Control Unit) but the actual tranny operation is the same. But that price for a '98 with low miles is still a steal. Grab it, buy a junkyard tranny for it, and never look back.

They charge one flat fee for each part... And its dirt cheap. LKQselfserve.com Rob L.
HOrnbrod
I wouldn't do anything until I ran the VIN. If the mileage checks out, no wrecks, etc. it's a super buy.
