97+ door question?

Recommended Posts

going to the JY tomorrow to look for some 97 up doors. I tried to search, will the door interior panels from my current MJ doors fit on the 97 up doors?

I have found a 99 XJ with manual windows but I want to keep my 87 interior panels just wanted to know if and how much work it would be.

Thanks

I have yet to see anyone do it but that doesn't mean it can't be done. I know the inner door behind the interior panel is different between the two. The 97+ doesn't have near as many clips to hold it on so you would have to make holes for those. I don't believe it has a hole where the pre 97 handle would go so you would have to cut that out. The linkage for the handle would probably need modified. The window crank shouldn't be to hard to deal with. While your at the JY look at them both and see if you think it's possible or too much work.

Why? The newer style door panels are so much better! I'll put it this way, I dunno about the window crank location, but I am currently doing the opposite swap ('99 panels on my '87 doors, all power...only because I don't want to have to deal with mis-matched doors right now...for as much as I would LOVE those 1 piece windows  )

I have to drill new holes for the snap clips, and the inside door handle/lock panel is in a different location, so I am going to cut a hole (in my case, farther back) and re-bend some rods. For me that'll be the easy part, the wiring is going to be the fun part :ack:

I can tell you the inner door skin (metal) on the 97+ is different than the previous generations door. There's a harder bend in the metal of the 97+ up high. Not saying you can't put the older panels on with some bending/ drilling/ modifying. There's a tab the newer armrest screws into you will have to cut off...You'll also have to cut a large enough opening in the new door for the inner door handle assembly which is different than the old one and in a slightly different location. Not saying it can't be done, just make sure the reason you're putting the new door on with the old panel is worth it to you.
