wilderness_guide Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 i have a 1991 MJ which i would like to change to manual steering. Besides the steering box do i need anything else?
Automan2164 Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 Why are you dropping the P/s? Welcome to the madness... Rob L.
Automan2164 Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 All you need is the box then... Or you could just loop the PS lines together... Rob L.
Eagle Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 You'll like the manual steering a LOT less. The steering ratio on almost all MJs is 14:1. If I remember correctly, the ratio on the XJ/MJ manual steering box was 28:1. However, if you want to do it, you'll need the manual box and a pitman arm to fit it. I have no idea if the manual box takes the same pitman arm as the power boxes. I have a fuzzy recollection that back in AMC days they were different.
HellCreek Posted October 31, 2009 Posted October 31, 2009 You are correct Eagle. I went from manual to power steering and like it a lot. The manual steering pitman arm and box has a smaller output shaft than the power combination. i don't like powersteering. You will really not like the manual steering. I could not wait to get rid of mine. -Tom
dasbulliwagen Posted November 5, 2009 Posted November 5, 2009 WHY do you not like power steering? Is yours leaking, noisy??? I also converted from manual to power and I love it. Really helps in parking maneuvers. Let us know what your problem with the power is and maybe we can help!
