MJ 4 cyl. owners. Please chime in

Recommended Posts

the 1.5 4cylyniders aer damn near indestructable and very torqey also they are light. with a 2.5 in my old comanche it could go places where my cousins 4wd checy had probles and my gramps 4.0 comanche got stuck just because the front was lighter. and most 2.5s are standard for better gearing.

edit my comanche was 2wd too so was gramps

If it's the 4 cylinder then, and a manual, it will either have the AX-5 5 speed or AX-4 4 speed. You cannot tell the difference between these just by looking, as the AX-4 is identical to the AX-5, except the 5th gear is missing.

The AX-4/5 CANNOT go behind a 4.0 6 cylinder.

Thanks. My thoughts are I will run the 4 cyl. till I find a donor with an AX-15 & just swap it all. This will work correct? XJ donors are very abundent in my area

Of course monday when I got a hold of the guy with the 4cyl. truck, he decided he didn't want to sell it. It had been on craigs list for at least 3 weeks. I seem to have a knack at finding cars for sale that the people change there mind on. Anyways, if someone could answer me this???? I've read that the 4 cyl. comanches have a shorter firewall, thus not allowing a 4.0 swap. Is this correct?

No. Firewall between 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder is the same.

What you've read is about the differences in the firewall in 84-86 XJs and 86 MJs. The 4.0 wasn't introduced until 87, and the 6 popper they used in 84-86 XJs and 86 MJs was a shotty 2.8L V6. The only firewall issue is dumping a 4.0 into an 86, which can be done, you just have to spend a few minutes with the firewall and a BFH.

Thanks for clearing up my mix-up. This will be good info for later as well. Thanks
