Spline count on the NV3550 and the NP242

Does anyone know if the NP242 will bolt directly to the NV3550, or do I need to find a specific NP242? I think the NV3550 is a 23 spline output... I just don't know about the NP242.. Thanks.

depends on what year, i think the pre 91 cases were 21 spline after is 23 (don't quote me on that but I'm pretty sure)

IIRC Oizarod115 is correct about the pre-91's having 21 splines.

OK, so if I get the NV3550 (23 Spline) and a post 1991 NP242, I should be good.

 

Now, since I'm putting this in my 1988 4x2 Comanche, I will need to shorten the drive shaft. Is that the only other thing that I'll need to do right away? I'm planning on adding the front axle shortly, but I have to get my truck on the road ASAP... Thanks.
