Are you talking about that little round black boot/seal on the top of the shifter body? . If so there in a clip under the extention's lip , you can pull it and work the extention off the rubber bushing but.............. IT aint easy  . Why are you trying to break the shifter down? Bounty Hunter
I've never been able to get a 5spd or transfer case shifter apart like that. I can see how it's assembled around the rubber bushing, but I can't get them apart.
Cabz
I have just ignored that little boot , when it goes bad I use a shock boot to make the shifter water tight . I had a YJ trans fill with water cause that lil bugger was bad .

Eagle
There is (or was) a special tool that old line Jeep dealers had for disassembling those shifter handles. It required having the assembly out of the tranny anyway, to put the shift handle in a vise, so for this purpose it would not have been helpful. The shop foreman at my dealership told me they tossed theirs years ago -- it is difficult to use, and there was virtually never a need for it. They needed the space in the tool crib for tools they use. Without that special tool, I believe there is no non-destructive way to separate the upper shift handle from the lower extension. Oizarod115
yeah, i just took 5-90s advice and pulled the dustboot up to access the three bolts that are juuuust not 10mm metrics... dk what the heck they are but a 6pt 10mm got them out without trouble so thats good.
