robfg67
How easily would an AX15 transmission from a 1998 XJ swap with my Peugeot? 1. Does engine need to be removed to do this swap? 2. Does the pilot shaft (on this AX15) need to be modified? 3. How is the slave cylinder handled? The Peugeot is internal. If this year AX15 is too difficult (to convert) is there a better year/transmission to use?

If this year AX15 is too difficult (to convert) is there a better year/transmission to use? 1: no 2: no (use the pilot bushing from an 84 CJ with the 304 engine. costs like $2) 3 use the bellhousing and internals from the AX-15. Try to get them all from the new trans, including the slave cylinder and most of it's line. You won't need anything from the Peugeot except the master cylinder and part of the hose 4 that trans is the best era of AX-15.
robfg67
Thanks Pete. Will my rear drive shaft work with the AX15?
Pete M
Driveshaft should be fine. What are you doing about the t-case?
robfg67
Good question! I bought a 242 from Tim (Twisty) because I wanted the functionality of full-time 4WD for the typical snow-covered roads here in the northeast. However, I know this won't work with the AX15 b/c it's a 21-spline. So, yes, I'll need a new TC too. I'm not planning on doing this tranny swap now, but I might be able to get this AX15 real cheap. I'll keep it at the ready for the inevitable Peugeot failure.
Pete M
A 21 spline 242 is somewhat rare-ish. Should be able to sell it to a Renix owner or 2.5L owner.
robfg67
You know, I never looked at it closely. I'll count the splines on the 242 t-case tonight. If it's actually a 23-spline, then it should work with the AX15-right?
