Engine swap

Recommended Posts

I need to get rid of my 2.5 and switch to the 4.0 (the 2.5 is dead and why not upgrade?). By looking at it, it doesnt look to complicated. its a '89 as well as the 4.0 I'm getting. Pretty mutch what I'm asking for is anything that i should know/look out for before doing this

Hey btw great forum!

You'll need just about everything from the donor rig. Wiring, motor mounts, exhaust, cooling system, transmission and maybe even the t-case. Oh, and driveshafts too. If your's is an 86, then you'll need the front clip too (radiator crossmember, hood and latches)

Yeah my AX5 tranny is like a 21 spline output and the AX15s are 23 or something. So you should probably get the Tcase or research.

I've read you have to relocate the motor mounts in the MJ. I wasn't sure about it so I backed out of doing a 4.0 swap - for one reason my 2.5 is in decent shape, plus I had an AX5 laying around, and the dashboard would have been out of a Grand. The only thing I had to buy was a clutch. So it was a better choice for me - but yeah if you're 2.5 is trashed why not upgrade?

Good luck!

Alright, well it looks like ill be best off if i just by a doner rig. I was hoping i wouldnt need a replace anything behind the tranny :headpop: well anyways ive got a 4 speed now and and a 5 speed would be nice, so in the spirit of replacing things with better things ill see if i can find a doner rig with a 4.0 and a 5 speed tranny. sweet :chillin:

thanks!

I just completed the same swap. I have a 90ish mj now. The wiring in the cab will be fine. You just have to swap the engine harness. That does include the brain. I went from a 2wd, 2.5, 4 speed to a 4wd, 4.0, auto with a 242 t case and every thing bolted in. I had a 89 donor xj. Just watch everything you take apart and it is not bad. On my donor I labeled all six injectors on the wiring side because I have heard to many nightmares about getting them staight. Every Question I had was covered in a forum somewhere so it should be no problem. Good luck and if I can help let me know.
