Need a little help with Backfiring

I have a 90 Comanche with 4cyl with about 275XXX miles. I was driving and all the sudden it lost power and began backfiring. It made it home barely. I am guessing that it has jumped time. It will not start now but does turn over. Will be checking the time the old fasioned way. Just wondering before i repalce the chain and other parts if there could be any other issue that i should check for.

For starters, if it's a 1990 you don't have a carb.

From your description, I would agree with you and believe that it's the timing. The 2.5L engine has a tensioner on the chain (unlike the 4.0L), which may be the problem, but if you are going to open it with that many miles on it you might as well repalce it all.

Other than the timing kit anything else I should change out? (i.e. Waterpump?)
