bigburly
I just bought a COMANCHE a few weeks ago, I always wanted a Jeep and I needed a truck. It needs some work. According to the chilton manual all 86-91 have a Dana 30 in the front end. I had to replace the Drivers side U-joint. 1. Is there a bearing on the spindle shaft between the differential bearings and the u-joint? I ordered the bearing and oil seal and they are both WAY to big around to be the right ones. I took off the cover and at the top of the housing it is stamped Dana 27 the gasket sealer clearly showed it. 2. Is the top ball joint stud supposed to move around (like my bottom one) or just up and down, like it does now? Any insight would be appreciated. 87manche
unless someone has swapped the front axle you have a dana 30. The bearing is a unitized setup, it comes off with 3 13MM 12point bolts from the back of the knuckle. The axle stub nut does not have to come off, but it makes it easier. IT is a 36MM nut, and needs to be retorqued to 180 Ft Lbs. the 13MM bolts get torqued to 70 Ft Lbs I think. the D 30 is semi-float, pull the bearing and the shaft will come right out. I don't have an answer regarding the balljoints.
CWLONGSHOT
I completely agree with 87. Some pics would help explain what you are talking about.... CW
JOMJ87
A dana 27 is form the orginal jeeps in particular the CJ-2 don't hold me to that exactley i could be wrong. ;)
pingpong
Also the Dana 27 axle is a closed knuckle axle. Kinda like yota's and sami's. They stopped using them in jeeps in the early 70's. So the chance of you having a 27 in the front of your solid axle rig is slim. I also think the smaller bronco's and ranger's used a modified d27 center section in their TTB setups. hmalice
He asked me to post this for him, since he is on the road today... This is what he needs answered... He wants to know if there is a bearing dana 30 between the u joint on the drivers side and the differencial bearing. Is it on the shaft somewhere, or does it hang in there? Is that shaft is floating between the ujoint and the splines on it? Is there any bearing that belongs on the shaft between there or is it supposed to flop around? 87manche
There is no bearing between the unit bearing and the carrier bearing. There is a seal Here's a link to taking the shaft out. http://web.archive.org/web/200407240216 ... elBearing/ Here's a link to an exploded view with part numbers. http://www.billhughes.com/dana30/
hmalice
Thank you very much, that answers his question.
hmalice
Can the seal be changed from the outside or do you have to take the cover off to do it?
87manche
http://madxj.com/MADXJ/technical/techni ... dSeals.htm You have to pull the seal out, so you'll have to pop the diff cover and take out the axle shaft so you can do soemthing similar to that. Oizarod115
hey 87, does it really take all that just to change the seals?
pingpong
its a lot of work to replace axle seals. Most of the time it is easier to buy another axle with the same gearing and good seals instead of replacing them
