MJ fender flare

Recommended Posts

How are they held on? I have a naked truck, with the usual rear wheel rust and such.

The fronts were trimmed by PO and appear to have followed above the original flare, then trimmed it off.

Were they held on with platic rivets, sheetmetal screws?

Anyone know what kind of bushwacker flares work?

The original flares were held on with a metal strip with studs welded to it. 9 times out of 10 the studs will break off when you try to remove the nuts off of them. What most (including myself) have done to re-attach them is just use a bolt with a washer on both sides, with a lock nut on the back side. I think it works out better than using the factory style setup.

The factory hardware is still available for the front, but the rear for the MJ is not available. You may be able to mod the XJ rear flare hardware to work, but the bolt pattern is a bit different between the XJ and the MJ rear flares.

As far as the bushwackers go, they are available specifically for the MJ's. We have a few photo's of them installed on a MJ on our website if you'd like to know what it looks like.

I want stock just because they are cheaper.

Can I use the rear ones from a XJ? I know the front will, but have seen that the rear ones are shorter.

As for that, can I buy them new? (OEM)I will make a decision on the hardware

i know the rear xj ones are diff, but if you do break the stud off the mounting point, just hammer it out and put a bolt and nut in there, thats what i did on mine. i have a full set of MJ flares in the classifieds...

XJ flares won't work in the rear. They are about 2" too short lengthwise, and about 1-1/2" too short in height. To use XJ flares, you would have to cut out the flare area from a 2-door XJ and graft it onto the MJ to reduce the size of the wheel opening.
