rverjeeper Posted July 23, 2008 Share Posted July 23, 2008 I'm having to replace the exhaust system on my '88 Comanche, 4.0 6cy. Where the exhaust pipe connects to the exhaust outlet on the engine manifold, there are two press fit studs. Sometime in the vehicle's history, one of the studs had been replaced with a plain bolt and nut, the other appears to be original. I have picked up two new studs for this project. My questions are: Is there some trick or "procedure" to removing the remaining stud? Is there some trick or "procedure" to install and press fit new studs? mjeff87 Posted July 24, 2008 Share Posted July 24, 2008 bang out the old ones with big hammer, and install the new studs with same hammer and a drift.....I just replaced a set on a Renix manifold recently (but the manifold is on the bench, not still in the vehicle). Pricey little suckers those studs are....mine were $5 and some change from the dealership, EACH (and just the studs, no nuts or washers either). I tried the search function, either I get no returns or 300+. I'm going to have to see if there is some search engine suggestions somewhere on this forum bang out the old ones with big hammer, and install the new studs with same hammer and a drift.....I just replaced a set on a Renix manifold recently (but the manifold is on the bench, not still in the vehicle). I tried using a hammer w/long metal rod to pound out the one still in the manafold. Tried heating up with a torch. No joy. As it is, the stud was in OK shape, would have preferred to replace both though. A new stud went in where the missing one was without hassle. Could have been worse, no longer available. Having said all that, I have an extra stud if someone needs it. Exhaust system replaced. Driving just fine. Thanks everyone! Manifold... best bet for removal is to hit it with an impact hammer. You will have them puppies out in a snap!!! Don't waste your time with the studs..
