Progress!!! 2 to 4 conversion
Bounty Hunter replied to bpm4x4's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
My wife would kill me if my '88 MJ ends up sitting in the garage for 3 years. It's already been in there about a month and to her it likely seems a lot longer. She's been very patient so far, considering her TrailBlazer sits outside while my MJ and YJ are in the garage  -
And it's not really a detracting factor, ever see a c-clip break? Can you imagine what it would take to break one?

Doing my AA SYE, problem...
Bounty Hunter replied to DirtyComanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I got my split-ring pliers at Sears, I think they're Craftsman. Plenty big enough for all the split-rings in the 231. Run about $15-$20. -
Doing my AA SYE, problem...

Shackle angle looks fine to me. I think you're going to have to take the transfer case apart. It's just more RTV and you'll get more proficient each time to disassemble and reassemble. Don't know how much you paid, but here's a heavy duty SYE for $169.99 shipped: http://tinyurl.com/cr2xh I've installed several of them, and about 5 jeepers in our jeep club run them. -
A performance cam will go well with roller rockers. Don't forget a header and performance intake setup.

I'm sure it is if it's a '92.

tips on lifting my rear
Bounty Hunter replied to attaboybob's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yes, a full-length AAL will increase the height even in a SUA, although you can negate the thickness of the leaf (minimal). I bit the bullet and went SOA, but I was installing a stronger axle anyway. -
Congrats, looks like you've got a decent platform to start from. '92 makes it the 4.0L HO, right? Not the pre'91 Renix.

I've got a basic guage cluster with a speedo and a ton of idiot lights, will another cluster with all the guage options fit right in and work?

What brake lines
Bounty Hunter replied to Bounty Hunter's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm gonna try the '96 Dakota rear brake line, and a pair of passenger front brake lines from a '95 YJ. Seems to be the consensus on Naxja. -
e-brake cables for 6" lift

Will stock cables work with a SOA? Are they available at the parts-stores or stealership only? -
Olympic Edition & 4spd manual questions
Bounty Hunter replied to Jax MJ Luvr's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'd bet a lot of '88s came with the olympic decals in the window, I know my '88 YJ did and it was a Laredo, not an olympic edition. I'm guessing the window stickers don't make it an olympic edition. -
Olympic Edition & 4spd manual questions
Bounty Hunter replied to Jax MJ Luvr's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
There's also the AX4, but I don't know what years/models it was available in. My old '88 YJ Laredo had the olympic decal in the window of the hardtop :D Haven't found on on my '88 MJ yet. -
I know where you're coming from, the same CAD is used on all YJ's. You have to really know how to troubleshoot the system to keep it functioning properly, unless you convert to a cable. Then it's a cheap way to spool the front for the ultimate in traction and reliability.
-
'95 YJ disconnects are the larger 297x ujoint similar to the 44, it's what I have in my YJ. The disconnect splines are monsterous, so no weakness there.
-
I noticed several members have mentioned swapping in a non-disconnect D30 into the front of their MJ's. What's everybody have against the disco axle? I prefer the disco axle, not only is it high pinion, but the CAD allows one to manually disconnect the pass. side axleshaft, a great combination with a front locker. I run a Lincoln Locker in the front and it's completely invisible on the road, it's my poor-man's selectable locker  Can't beat the traction offroad.

My ebrake cables are shot, any good donors for a shortbed MJ with 6" of lift?
-
Welcome, sounds like you know what you're getting into. All MJ's are SUA that I know of, swapping to a SOA is good for about 5"-6", generally too much to match with a shortarm front suspension (but I'm doing it anyway). In what state is this MJ you're looking at?
-
Then why look at any jeep I-6?

Who here has been to www.rorp.com? Awesome offroad park.

For me, the GM 4.3L Vortec v6 or a SBC would be easier and more power. And it's not like every other 4.0L jeep out there (except with a more hacked up install job).
-
Where'd you hear that a 4.0L swap is easy? You would likely need an entire front clip from an 4.0L XJ or MJ as I beleive their designed differently, allowing for a longer engine. Don't be surprised if you won't have enough clearance at the firewall as well. Motor mount perches will need to be cut off the psuedoframe and new ones welded on. Still sound easy? The 4.0L and 4.2L are basically the same externally, so it's a toss-up. Just be sure to use the 4.0L head as it flows much better.

Anybody know where I can get a new tailgate handle/lever for my MJ? The linkage appears okay, just the handle mechanism was ate up.

I did so much research on it I forget where I saw the recommendation against 0º. Your point makes a lot of sense though. The POR article was tough to skim over looking for one sentence, I looked for that quote for a while and gave up. I'm gonna set my pinion parallel with the TC output, I'm not going to worry about the <3º pinion rise at cruising speed.

This is where I got most of the info, and the 0º info: www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/PR-shaft/index.html
