NV3550 connected to an NP241

The NV3550 is coming out of a 2000 XJ... Also, I meant to say NP242, not NP241... sorry... -
NV3550 connected to an NP241

My mistake... Yes, it's an NP242... The manual tranny is out of a 2000 XJ. -
My 4x4 conversion is coming together and I have sourced an NV3550 tranny for a fair price. I have an existing NP231 that was behind a 1988 4.0 Auto that I was thinking of using, but would rather have the NP241. I've read that the NP231's behind a 4.0 were always 23 spline input shafts.. is that correct? As for the NP241, since they were behind Automatics, is the input shaft a different length? Long story boiled down to a simple question... If I get a 2001 NV3550 and a late 90's NP241, will they match up? Thanks for everyones help and patience.

Question on my 4x4 upgrade.

Gotcha... If the NP242 is going to be too big of a pain, I'll just use the NP231 and change out the input shaft... That shouldn't be too hard, should it? -

I'm assuming I need to get a new clutch since the old tranny is the Peugeot BA10... If so, and I'm getting an NP3550, I'm guessing I need to get a clutch for a 2000+ XJ with a 4.0, right? Thanks in advance. -

Peugeot is toast... I'm replacing it with an NV3550... -

I don't understand what you mean by Ds not working... What are Ds? (Please don't say Ds nuts...) -
Question on my 4x4 upgrade.

OK, I just heard from my mechanic in North Carolina. He will convert my 4x2 to 4x4, and install my new transmission, for a grand total of $800... I'm pretty sure that's a good price, but I just wanted to bounce it off the group. Clarke -
Question on my 4x4 upgrade.

Excellent info. So it looks like as long as I get a 1991 or newer NP242 it should mate up with an NV3550, right? Thanks again! Clarke -
Question on my 4x4 upgrade.

Both cars are 1988 MJ's with the 4.0. The donor car is an Automatic, mine is a manual. My plan is to use a newer NV3550 from a 2000 XJ (23 spline, right?) and an NP242 from something else for the full-time 4x4 option. I need to make sure I get a 23 spline NP242 to match the NV3550. Is there an easy way to search for one of these? For instance, are all NP242's 23 spline after a certain year? Also, is the NP231 that's in my donor truck a 21 or 23 spline? Thanks. -
OK, So I sourced a 4x4 MJ as a donor to my 1988 4x2 MJ. I'm planning on using the front and rear axles, driveshafts, and transfer case. Since the donor car has 130K+ miles on it, is there anything I should look at replacing while the swap takes place? Should I rebuild anything? Should I be replacing bushing or anything? Thanks in advance. Also, does anyone know the spline count on a stock transfer case from a 1988 4x4 is 21 or 23? Thanks. Clarke

Well, since I'm not going to be doing any serious off roading, I think the NV3550 and NP242 should be fine... I just want a good 4x4 truck for use in bad weather and the occasional trip down a bad road... Besides, I can get an NV3550 for about $550 and the NP242 for about $275... I think this is a pretty good price, but I could be wrong...

OK, so it looks like if I get the NV3550 (23 Spline) and a post 1991 NP242 (23 spline), I should be good for the tranny/transfer part of my conversion. Now, since I'm putting this in my 1988 4x2 Comanche, I will need to shorten the drive shaft. Is that the only other thing that I'll need to do right away? Are there any other "Gotcha's"? I'm planning on adding the front axle shortly, but I have to get my truck on the road ASAP... Thanks.

Electronic version of the FSM's?

Are the manuals still available from the dealer? Are they still being published? -
Electronic version of the FSM's?
clarkerussell replied to clarkerussell's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
OK, I found the 1988 version but it looks like it's not a "real" manual. It looks like it's a 3rd party manual for the Cherokees. If I can find a good FSM for the 1989 Cherokee's I'll cut the spine off and scan all the images.
