help finding missing fuse or something else
creekscout replied to creekscout's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
productive day today, I now have the wiper delay working, cruise control is working, and I have located where the chime module should be but have not found a module after looking thru 2 junkyards today. If anyone can give me a part # for the chime module I will try to find a new one. As far as the headlight sentinel, I think maybe it was a '91 cherokee laredo that I had that I know had the headlight sentinel that had me thinking the mj had one, so I think now that it did not have that option. The main problem seemed like some of the contacts for the above items were corroded a bit and after working the connectors around some all these things are now functional. Thank you everyone for your advice. -
help finding missing fuse or something else

Ok thanks for all the great info, tomorrow I will check for all those things, but I already know that blue chime module is not there. The next problem will be finding the right parts that I need, new or scrapyard. -
help finding missing fuse or something else
creekscout replied to creekscout's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I do believe there is one or two empty connectors under the dash but I would need to figure out what goes in them. I will look tomorrow and try to take some pics and maybe someone can identify what it is. Thanks for your replies. -
This is going to be long to explain. I am trying to find what is missing[yearsagowhen my son was using the mj he removed something I think because he did not want the chimes working] now I would like to fix what ever that was. So here is what all does not work anymore, chimes, cruise control, wiper delay, headlight delay. I appreciate any suggestions on what to check. It is a '92 4x4 auto 4.0l longbed.

OK I jumped the nss and it started so that is what I have to work on. On my mj the end of the connector that needed to be jumped was the male end which goes to the switch, the one picture of the jumped connector showed the female jumped which on mine goes to the transmission. Thanks everyone for your replies, don't come on this site too much anymore but it is a great help when more knowledge than I possess is needed.

where is it NSS located? my mj is a column mounted automatic. So if it is the nss then I can not even jump across the solenoid to start it? No it will not start in neutral either.

my 92 comanche wii not start. I had trouble getting it into park today and when I finally got it into park I shut it off. Later I went to start it and it will not attempt to start, meaning it seems like the starter is not getting energized. Any ideas?

Don, that is exactly the solution I am looking for. Will the fan still function with the temperature as well as with the switch? Will there be any problems with the CEL coming on. This would only be an on/off switch not a three way right?

How do I test my sensor while it is still in the thermostat housing?
-
When you replace the sensor in the thermostat housing can I use teflon tape or will that affect the grounding of the sensor?
-
I would like to know where the temp sensor is located for the electric fan in my 92 mj with a 4.0L. I know there is a sending unit in the thermostat housing but I do not know if that is for the elec. fan or temp gauge or both. Also I would like to know what temp they are set to turn on the fan. At 220 my fan does still not come on yet it does come on with the defrost & a/c.

I want to replace the shocks on my 92 metric ton mj with 1 3/4" front lift, stock rear. I would like to know if the metric ton had the same rear shocks as standard trucks? Also what shock size do I need for the front if the distance between the axle mount and fenderwell hole is 20"? Thank You for any help

Front Pipe/ Cat flange bolts
creekscout replied to UNL1MTD's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
the crossmember exhaust hanger has two of the flange bolts pressed into it, at least on the one I got from the dealer to replace my rusted apart hanger. -
timing cover replacement

Just found out that OS 34308R is the oilpan gasket. I do not want to have to drop the pan, but that makes it sound like I have to. -
timing cover replacement
creekscout replied to creekscout's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I already have the balancer off, I just want to wait before removing the timing cover to make sure I don't mess up the oilpan gasket before I know where to cut the gasket. I figure maybe the gasket kit will have instructions. I can't figure out what OS 34308R is, and what is its use. I am also having trouble finding another timing cover, dealership wants $100 for a new one but it is not readily available and will take at least 2 weeks to get. Checked on ebay and there are none listed on there that match my casting #53020232. Seems like '92 was a single year model because on the parts listing it is the only year that requires OS 34308r. Also I will likely be replacing my timing gear set as well. -
Need to replace my timing cover as the harmonic balancer ground thru it. I need to know how to replace it without dropping the oilpan, does anyone have the fsm instructions on doing this, I am unsure how to handle the oilpan to timing cover sealing. Oh by the way it is a '92 MJ with a 4.0L.

I am in need of a good timing cover to fit a '92 mj with a 4.0L 6 cyl.

If you have read some of my recent posts you know I am really struggling to find a transmission fix for resurrecting my '86 MJ that I bought with a bad 2.8 V6, 2wd, and 904 automatic. I have a 3.4 camaro motor to put in, but found the 904 auto was shot also. My latest find is a 904 auto and 231 transfer case out of a 2.5l wrangler. From what I can find the 904 should bolt right up to the 3.4, I am a little unsure about the converter and flexplate fit. My bigger question is will the 231 from a wrangler work in the mj, yes I am planning on putting the transfer case in now because I think in the future I will want to go to 4wd and therefore that will already be done. Can anyone give me advice if this combo should work before I spend the money on it.

Ok, here I am again with another transimission question. I have this mj that i saved from the crusher that had a blown headgasket. I have acquired a 3.4 camaro motor to put in, but found out after I had engine and trans. out that the 904 is shot. As I am having trouble finding a good 904 cheap to replace it with I am now rethinking my options. It is a 2wd mj but I am thinking that since I may decide to go 4wd someday, now would be the time to at least put in the transfer case. So here is the latest option, I found an 86 yesterday that has a manual trans in it, along with the transfer case and evearything else I will need to change over to 4wd manual. I did not think to check at the time what manual trans is in it, what are the possibilities, ax4 or ax5. Also I would like to know how good these trans are, I had a 87xj years ago with a puegot 5sp and I knowa that was junk. Sorry for the long post, but any advice will be appreciated. One reason I like to go with a diff trans than the 904 is to gain some cruising speed with the 5sp.

Ok, another question regarding replacing the 904 transmission in a '86 2wd mj. I found someone who has a good 904 transmission from a '86 xj, but it was 4wd and only the transmission is there. I could put the tailshaft from my 904 onto it, but I am thinking about locating a transfer case and putting that onto it and installing it that way so that in the future if I want to go to 4wd I will only have to swap out the front axle. My question about this route is will my 2wd driveshaft fit or will I need to find a 4wd shaft? What transfer case came on the back of the torqueflite transmission?

mj engine swap 2.8-3.4
creekscout replied to creekscout's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well jeepcomj you do have me thinking maybe I will consider the fuel injection route if that is all that's involved, other than the fuel pump and fuel lines to be changed. I just got done taking the seats and carpet out and things don't look that bad there either. The only hole in the floor is about halfway up the trans. hump, drivers side, right under the heater duct. Where in the world would water come in from that high up? Thanks again for all your replies. -
mj engine swap 2.8-3.4
creekscout replied to creekscout's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
the main reason I do not want to mess with the wiring is that 23 year old wires look to be hard and brittle and I do not want to disturb it if I can help it. I would like to keep the fuel injection but I have to wait and see what the costs for the motor will be, I found one for $350 with 88x on it but it about a 3 hr drive to check it out. Thanks for all replies as I know I am going to need help with this alot. -
mj engine swap 2.8-3.4
creekscout replied to creekscout's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
what replacement carbs will work. Also does the 3.4 have a distributor or coilpacks. -
Since I can't get the search to help me find info I have to ask for info on swapping a 3.4 camaro into a '86 mj 2wd, auto, 2.8. I want to keep the swap as simple as possible so I would keep it carbuerated and use whatever parts I need to to avoid having to do much wiring hacking. I just bought the truck with a very good body but it has not been on the road for about 7yrs. because the pov said it had a blown head gasket. I am going to try to get it started but I don't have alot of hope. I have found a 3.4 motor out of a 94 firebird that I am thinking about buying to install. What is the bolt pattern of the bellhousing, gm or chrysler? Thanks for any help.
