A junkyard I contacted last week finally got back to me today and has both the front and rear shafts. They shipped them out so I should have them early next week. If for some reason the front is wrong, I'll get back to you about yours. I appreciate you checking it out for me. I have a few friends that live in the L'anse area. If you see someone named Jane Van Buren, Ellen Baxter, or Todd Tehako, tell them Rich says hi. :)

Where in the UP? I grew up in Ironwood.
-
Yes, it's a 231 T-Case. I just swapped out the original AW4 for the AX15. I'm currently running the stock rear shaft but it's short, and the front shaft doesn't fit. Let me know if you have the front shaft. Where are you headed north?

I need the front and rear drive shafts for a 4x4 Comanche short bed, with manual AX15 tranny and Dana 44 rear. Reply here or call me at 920-497-7056. Thanks!

I found one. Thanks again for the external slave tip - that's the bellhousing I got.

4WD model Thanks for the external slave tip, Geonovast.

I'm looking for an AX-15 tranny to replace the dying AW4 in my '92 Comanche. I'd like to get the bellhousing, transmission, shifter, and t-case, and close to Green Bay, WI would be a good thing.

I had it flushed.

Thanks for all the info. Tomorrow I'm going to replace the fluid and the filter.
-
Thanks Wildman. I did check the fluid when I got home; it was just shy of a quart low. I'm going to change the fluid and filter this weekend. Hey, at least now the bottom of my truck is coated well for a long Wisconsin winter of road salt! :)

The fluid was semi-burned. The MJ used to be a plow truck, so even though it only has 70,000 miles on it, the drivetrain has been worked hard. I need to get some new fluid in there and check things out. It shifts fine, though.

This has been driving me crazy, so I decided to post here to see if anybody could help figure this out. On October 4, I drove my stock 1992 Jeep Comanche with 4.0/AW4 about 200 miles to pick up an old Chevy coupe body. During the week before this, I had some issues with the "check engine" light and battery light coming on periodically. On Friday the 3rd I had the charging system tested and everything looked good, and neither warning light came on after that. Of course, on the way to pick up the Chevy on the 4th, the check engine light came on. The battery light would go on and off periodically. Right after I left to head home, both lights came on and stayed on. About halfway home, everything died - the truck had been running on battery power only and the battery died. My wonderful wife got a new battery and brought it to me. I installed it, hoping it would get me home, which it did. OK, here's the strange leak part of the story. About 30 miles from home, my wife (following behind me) called my cell phone and told me that my truck started blowing smoke out the back. It was starting to get dark, everything was still working, so I kept going so I could get home before I had to turn the lights on. Upon returning home, I had transmission fluid dripping from the whole underside of the truck, more so on the passenger side, from about where the cooler lines are attached to the transmission back. The smoke was the result of the fluid burning on the exhaust. I replaced the alternator the following day and cleaned everything up, then went to try to find the tranny leak. It didn't leak anymore. I've been driving it every day since then, about 30 miles a day, and it has not leaked at all. I'm wondering if it had anything to do with the load in the back of the truck, probably 600 pounds or so. Any ideas? I initially suspected the tranny cooler lines, but they're OK. Sorry for the long story!

I asked this same question a couple of months ago. Mine ended up being 7/16 x 4".
-
Thanks for the tip, but I'm nowhere near ready for this project. I have too many things going as it is and not enough time or money to support them. Sound familiar, anyone? ;)
-
That's a good score! I picked up a 440 a few months ago for $200. Someday I'll find a good project to put it in. I'm thinking Dart or Duster.

That's great news. They don't do any testing up in our part of the state, but I wonder how long until they do.

Yes, they are definitely 7/16-14 thread. I took this "opportunity" to upgrade to the Durango steering box. So far so good.
-
Never mind - I found it. They are 7/16 x 4" grade 8.

Does anybody know the size(s) of the bolts that hold the power steering box to the frame on an MJ? This morning I learned that there was only one bolt in mine when it broke as I was pulling into the parking lot at work. I'd like to get it bolted back up so I can steer it into a better spot where I can check for damage. Thanks.

Mine arrived today - thanks much!!
