does this look like the correct part? Thanks Hornbrod... Image Not Found

The electrical plug that plugs onto the back of the switch got hot and partialy melted on two terminals. I did not see anything else plugged into it, so seems I do not have that option installed. The signals work fine until the headlights are turned on. Then the right one doesn't blink. When I got the truck I remembere that there were a bunch of new buld in the glove box. Perhaps it is something simple like the wrong bulbs installed, but don't think I could get that lucky. The girl that sold it to me said there were electrical problems. I replaced a bad alternator and a bad battery and thought I was good. Went to get it inspected and failed. I never thought to turn the headights on at the same time as the signals. Fixing the melted plug may be a challenge...

I have seen it all now.... Trying to track down a persistent squeak in the truck, so I have jacked it up several times and sprayed everything I could find that might possible squeak under the truck. I finally decide it must be coming from the body bushings so I grab the spray can on more time. When I get to the front of the bed mounts I find that the nut is missing. I rummage through my fastener bin and find one and tighten it up. I'm thinking finally I found the reason for the squeak. Anxious to test drive I don't even get out of the drive way and I know that wasn't the cause. I'm bummed... I pull the truck back into the shop and jack it up again. I crawl back under to spray the remaining bed bushings that in my haste I didn't lube, and I see that every bolt and every nut meant to hold the bed on the frame is missing. WTF! Best I can figure is when the PO pulled the bed to repaint the truck, they never reinstalled the bolts. I'm really not sure how the bed stayed on knowing that this truck has had several thousand miles put on it after it was painted many years ago. Now for the tech... Where is the headlight delay module located? I know it is an option, but I'm troubleshooting an electrical problem and my fuse block is messed up where that fuse plugs in. I pulled the fuse, and see no apparant differences. What does that relay do? PS. Squeaks all gone. I'm very happy!

If it turns out to not be the CPS, then the next in line would be the reluctor inside the distributor. They are pretty rliable, but do cause troubleshooting nitemares. Thankfully they are really inexpensive, so may want to just go ahead and swap it out for a new one. You really do need to verify you have voltage to the ignition components first. It could just be a simple break in a 12v wire.

Thanks a bunch guys. This Comanche is starting to grow on me.

Pete, Exactly the information I was looking for. My closest salvage yard is 210 miles away, so I don't have the luxury of just dropping by to get measurements. I will scout them for a 96 4wd next time I go. Might check the auctions also, as I have a friend who goes. As for the gears, I know how to set them up, so no problem there. I do not know about the np-242 T.C. though. Care to educate me on that swap? What year/vehicle?
-
Been researching and see that the 94 up XJ is where they started using the external clutch slave, so that answeres my question as to what year is best. The XJ search begins...

In my experience, the coils don't usually become intermittent. Now the ignition module will run for a couple of minutes then shut down. Not saying it isn't the coil, but I would have the module tested first. It's an 88?

I won't know that answer until after I know for sure my tire size and what my intended use of this truck will be. If I had to guess, I would say 4.10's but to be honest, I don't want to open the proverbial can of worms that larger tires require, so that 32" tire size I mentiones in my last post could easily shrink... I am building a rock buggy at the moment, and just installed an 8.8 in it. I really like that axle. Would be nice if they fit under the MJ's. Have to research that one!
-
Yes, I knew that but somehow got that typed in wrong. As for the tires, I have a dedicated crawler buggy, and an 06 Rubicon running 4" lift and 35's. This would be just an extra truck I can use to keep miles off my F250. Soooooo 32's most likely, 33's max. ( I only say 33's because I have a set of five new mud terrains) but lets say 32's for this conversation. From my experience, the HP D30 can handle those no problems especially with stronger shafts.

I have decided to do the conversion and will just purchase an XJ complete. I'll swap my BA/10 5 for an AX15, and use the NP231. Would prefer a HP D35 w/o the axle disconnect. What years of XJ should I be searching for? Late 90's up to what? I don't know the cherokee line very well. My tub and frame is about as rust free as I could ever hope to find, so by doing the conversion I will in a great truck for the money. 2wd is not an option for my needs.

What a great resource. Went to get inspected today and it failed becuse when the headlights are on the right turn signal quits working, and sometimes the backup lights blink. The back side of the headlamp switch got hot and melted at some point, so perhaps some damage to the wires was done. Going to have to take the dash aprt, but first I might just replace the multi function switch inside the column to see if that fixes it.

Hurry Help Before Sunday!
Biotex replied to CallmeMaybe's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Do you know if it has the correct length pushrods? So are you saying that you tightened down the rockers, then it quit running or did you do some other stuff that may have caused it to lose spark? -
I ended up selling this truck to a cousin. She needed a p/u, and i felt this one would suit her needs. She drove it all over for almost a year, and had to move out of state. She asked if I wanted to buy it back. It's mine again.

Guage cluster swapping questions
Biotex replied to Biotex's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Excellent information! The sending units will not be a problem. Just wish there were some JY's around here. Thanks. -
After going over my new 88MJ, I have decided the first think I'd like to modify is the basic guage cluster package. Assuming I can find one available with the factory tach and non idiot lights, was wondering if the wiring harness will accomodate the swap. My experience is that only one harness was manufactured, so all the connections should be there. Is this ASSumption correct? What years should I be looking for to find the cluster I want?
-
Was looking at the Kelley B.B. prices, and was amazed to see that the retail prices are sometimes higher than what the truck sold for originally. I realize inflation has a lot to do with this, but it is nice to know that the MJ hold its value.

Thanks Guys! Plans for the truck! Hmm... I have a LOT of 4wd trucks. Mostly internationals. I have a CJ for crawling. It is just fun to have projects around me. To be honest, I paid $300 for the truck, is the only reason I bought it. It was purchased sight unseen, because I was thinking if the tub is a POS then I would pull the motor and tranny for my Scout 800 project. When I go to pick up the truck, I'm like Da** I can't part this out. The PO said it hasn't run in three months due to an electical problem. I didn't even ask what the problem was because i thought I was just buying an engine. I didn't care. So when I go to charge the battery, I find it is shorted out and won't charge. I stick a spare in, and she fired right up. Runs super in fact. The alternator light is on, so I do a qick voltage check, and find the alt. is bad. I fugure someone hooked up the jumper cables backwards and took out both. So I ordered a new alternator yesterday. I called the PO and asked if the gas guage worked cause it was pegged out on the full reading. Yup. works fine. The tank is full of fresh gas! :clapping: I pressure washed the engine bay before I started to take off the alternator is why the cover is so clean. I hadn't cleaned up the interior yet so it looks dirty in the picture. While armoralling the interior, I noticed no tears in the viny floor covering. Someone took real good care of this truck. 4 brand new shock installed. 4 good tires. Neopream seat covers, so the seats are in great shape mostly. Not one dent in the bed, so might have had a liner at one time. The paint is ok, except the clearcoat is peeling badly. I haven't made up my mind to keep it or not yet.

Hmmm! I logged on to add to this thread to get into the tech questions I had. I see the moderators move me to "The Pub". :dunno: I figured I would start with an introduction first. Guess not!

Here is what I just purchased: The paint job was a cheapie, as the clear coat is peeling badly, but there is zero rust. I'm the second owner, and it has been living here in the desert it's whole life. I'm in the middle of replacing the alternator, other than that everything seems to work.
