WTF is the problem now?
Thunderbear replied to Thunderbear's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
OK, first I look at the TPS. Apparently, it toasted a wire at one point. The plug is slightly deformed, and whats this? One wire blew off the sheathing when it got hot. "Insulated" with electrical tape. Going to cut out the bare wire and splice in new good wire. Splice, since my soldering gun and shrink tubing is in NC, along with most of my good tools. :wall: Well, clean up the connection, test for continuity from wire to plug, and toss it back in. It's as good as I can make it at the moment with the tools at hand. So, next step... the multimeter says I have continuity from battery to solenoid post, but what's this? It's fluctuating. I investigated further. Found that while I couldn't move the heavy gauge wire at all from the top of the engine, I could move it while under the truck. Out comes the 13mm 1/4" drive socket and the mini socket wrench. Cranked for five minutes in the whopping one and a half inches of clearance, and got it tight on the solenoid post. Button up the battery cables, and hop in. Fires up! SUCCESS. -
I went ahead and did it yesterday, and somehow killed the starter. That's to be diagnosed tonight. On my 2.5, it's also four bolts, the top two were 1.5in, the bottom two were 2.5, but probably should have gone with three inch. Starter was one T12 inverted Torx, and one 13mm bolt. I don't think that was standard. :ack: Holes weren't threaded, that I could tell, so I just went with some Grade 5 bolts from a hardware store.

WTF is the problem now?

You were right on both counts. I readjusted it, but it still leaks. Couple of bolt holes are cracked, I had epoxied them closed and had washers torquing those down, but no go. New valve cover incoming. I'm hoping not on the starter, it was a b*@$£ and a half to get back in. That ground you mentioned is frayed a tiny bit, but it's there. I'll keep looking. By look to, you mean replace? or blow out with air or what? Thanks for your ideas, guys. -
You too?

Oil pan gasket help for 2.5
Thunderbear replied to 87Chief's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sku/J ... 43902.html That a one piece or is the picture wrong? I'll be looking for one of these soon too, I'll have a number for you from NAPA, got a quote for one today, actually... 8.79. Didn't ask if it was a one piece, though. Edit: On a side note, I have a 97 Sahara lifted 3.5"/1" body on 33s and an 86 Comanche 2.5L/AX5 stock.. haha. -
Jesus, the thing ran fine when I bought it, I clean it, give it some new parts, take care of its issues, and it $#!&s the bed. Mother@#$%er. Today I put back on the flywheel dust cover, which involves dropping the starter, bolting on the cover, and remounting the starter. So I yank the batt cables, pull the wires off the starter, drop it, clean the starter while it's off, mount the cover, then the starter, and move on to the belt change. Finish the belt change, reconnect the battery cables, and bzzz. No start. Lights, everything else fine. Push start it, fires up, hesitatingly, dies, turn key and it starts like normal. Let it idle, look for leaks, find them :wall: , and back it up into place, while waiting for the degreaser to burn off the exhaust. Finally, ten minutes later, I kill it, and attempt to key start. Nothing. WTGDF. Let's recap: I want to remodel the piece of $#!& with the 12GA next to me.

belt change on 86 with amc 2.5

I just figured this out myself, and I think you only need to loosen the center 14mm pivot bolt. I'll add pictures, so people can see what I'm talking about. The pivot bolt is the one my finger is on. The other three bolts just hold the plate covering the pivot area, which is what makes it confusing the first time. You can just see the start of the arc in which the assembly slides here: When finished, you want it parallel again, like this: Yes, I know this topic is old, but now it has pictures and can help somebody else. -
Argh.. stop leaking you son of a b*@$£!

Well, I scored new tires, but they're a touch bigger than I wanted. Ended up with 265/75/15s on some aluminum 5 spokes. Prepped and painted bumper - on the truck, since trying to remove it grenaded one of my Craftsman deep sockets. Prepped and painted wheels Prepped and painted dumbass chrome tips on exhaust now nice flat black Fabbed license plate light Pulled valve cover to realign gasket - no more spitting oil Mounted 3 tires - tomorrow is no 4. Still need to get another tail light bulb, a wiper set, and mount the flywheel dust cover, then get her inspected.

New battery terminals New battery Oil Change New cap and rotor New plugs New wires New valve cover gasket New air filter Now it's puking oil somewhere, right onto the exhaust manifold.. smoking like a sumbitch. :fs2: :wall: Tomorrow is finding the leak, and showing the rear bumper some love. And maybe new(er) tires and wheels if I'm super lucky. Also, flywheel dust cover to go on, and working on relivening the bench seat a bit.

Best I can tell, I need to drop the starter for this and maneuver it around the exhaust. I need to know the thread pitch though.. nothing to fasten it on with.

So, I have an AX15 behind the 2.5, but apparently it was an auto before. So the tranny cooler lines are still here, as well as what looks like a speedo gear. Is that what I'm looking at? Secondly, the two prongs off the side of the transmission housing.. do they serve a purpose? Random wire coming from the harness under the alternator.. And finally, a random connector from the harness on the passenger side. Ideas? Questions? Death threats? Thanks.

Ha. No, this will be a daily/plow truck/camper. The TJ will handle all of the hairy 4x4 aspects of Alaska. Thanks. It looks a little rougher now here in Alaska. I'm already surprised, although coming from a lifted brick on 33s with a big 6 and a lot of tools, the bar isn't very high. Do or die! I turned it both ways, just to be sure. :wrench:

I got your mini console right here.. doesn't get any more mini than just a bezel. Is this important? Found it in the floorboard. Headliner woes. Steering wheel.. shell. Mileage.. which I'm pretty sure isn't quite kosher.

Bought it and brought it home! Also, removed an entirely unnecessary teenager-applied eyebrow, along with crusted decals. Simple greened the crap out of all of it.

I guess you don't always have to match axle ratios...

Purpose? I thought dunes at first, but probably not with a slammed/tubbed rear end. All I can think of is show truck. Boo. -
I found, after looking for a unique commuter that's got a bed and still gets decent gas mileage (2.5).. a decent floorboarded MJ (in freaking ALASKA!), with a dash swap with tach and gauges, and a 5-speed (AX15), I think. For 1500! It can keep my TJ company! Even though it's got the major things I want, the interior is going to need some love. But first, I think I'm going to have to find some emissions stuff off an XJ. I don't know if it'll pass inspection without all that stuff. Pics Thurs when I bring her home.
