  1. Hey everyone! I traced my oil leak from front to back, doing each gasket as suggested by cruiser54. The transmission is leaking from the front and the back. It just kind of sucks because I don't want to put good money after bad. No way it's under 8 hours of shop time, so I figure $1000 isn't out of the ballpark with a clutch while I am up in all that. Otherwise it runs pretty well. No grinding at all. Vacuum Disconnect works well. I eventually plan on making it a working truck, but I think if the poo-geot makes it a few more years, that might be enough for me to build out or buy a nice ax-15... Thoughts? Obviously money is a consideration here. I think $1000 more is all I can put into this before it has to help me make money or sit indefinitely l. I'm an absolute amateur and don't have lots of tools, but I have a roof and a slab and a few jackstands lol
  2. I have won! Thanks everyone for your tips with the RMS! Unfortunately due to oil splashing backwards, I now understand that the transmission input shaft seal leaks badly, as well as the transfer case output. Goody. Now there's the question of, what do I do now? I have to drop the transmission for sure. And comets it before winter... It feels somewhat frustrating to drop the transmission and put lots of new things into a Ba10/5 and an np242, and a new clutch and slave while I am there. Would I have to rebuild and re-seal basically anything I replaced it with? It's like $35 total of seals if I replace everything, plus $200ish for the clutch kit with slave. Advice? The transmission in it runs great, shifts smoothly, doesn't grind in any gears in high or low and I would say the clutch is probably original but maybe about halfway worn.
  3. Thanks everyone. I got it out without dropping the transmission or loosening the crank. That pin tip was helpful. Tomorrow I will start putting it all back, clean her up, take her for a ride and see if she still leaks. If it's the transmission front seal, well that sucks, but I think I'll start that one from the other end. I do have an opportunity to purchase an ax-15 with the transfer case and everything for a swap for $500 if I pull it myself. Worth it?
  4. 1989 Jeep Comanche. 210584 is where the odo stopped last March. I'm still working on that... Original clutch and ba10/5. Maybe I'll fix it soon.
  5. Okay! So the rear main CAN be accessed through the oil pan method. I got the pan off, and got the rear bearing cap off, and found the seal. Replaced the easy side, and then took my brass punch set to the rear main. Now I have a new problem. The Rear main seal collapsed in on itself. I can sink my punch 1" through the original seal, bent (slightly) around the crank and it is not budging. Side note, the dust shield appears to clamped between the motor and the transmission in this model. It also will not budge after all the bolts are taken out. Suggestions?
  6. The truck was purchased to do farm work, pull small stumps, haul dirt, gravel, a trailer with roughly 2500lbs, get out of the mud, and do truck things. Though it is in nice shape, it's not really about that for me. Also, my crippling student debt means that I am married to any vehicle i may have until someone dies. There's an ax15 transmission near me for $200. Kit is about $350, but it needs all sorts of other things other than rebuilt in order to get in there. $700 is kind of speculative. The kit from dead jeep is $2500ish, which is fine... I may just buy the kit because I don't really want to mess with finding all the parts and then finding out what condition they're in and such. Its just really inconvenient and most of my savings :/ Unfortunately the RMS leaks so much oil that it got on the clutch ,which now slips. The Chilton shop manual Rear main seal writeup says "remove transmission" as step 1 for ba10/5 and says "disconnect negative battery terminal" for the ax-15... I got the oil pan off enough to look up there and found a brand new oil pan gasket... Bad news... and there is no transmission inspection plate in there that I could see. It doesn't look like I can access the RMS from that side. I put the project down and went home, so I'll send pictures next time I get out there to verify ...
  7. So you absolutely have to remove the engine to change the rear main seal on the ba10/5 equipped comanches, huh? This is a serious problem... I bought this Comanche for $8500 (ouch) and while it is not rusty, and very clean 4x4, it has taken so much money in like 2 months... I don't really have any other options, too much student loans to finance anything, (and honestly wouldn't want to anyway... ) If I'm ripping the ba10/5 out, I may as well put in an ax-15 but that's at least $700 if I rebuild it myself and install it (have never done this before)... All searches for reasonable used ones are over $1000... I am feeling very disheartened that I had to sell my property to afford a decent truck, and now it's leaking majorly from the RMS and I am here .. maybe this is more of a support request? How do I get through this? Do I just put the ba10/5 with 220000 back in?
  8. Where do I acquire a Throttle Position Sensor for an 1989 manual MJ? I can't seem to find one where both the harness is built well and the sensor works. My TPS is currently three wire nuts after a the center of the harness fell apart, and the first and second sensor both don't put out any kind of voltage that is readable or steady. Help lol
  9. Thanks for your help organizing! Mine is a 1989 4.0 5 speed 4wd. Short Bed Laredo, I believe. 1J7FJ26L8KL459084 It has been painted a darker blue, and the bed is rhino lined. It had 220000 miles on it when the Odometer stopped in Feb 2026. I aim to fix that. It has the BA10/5 and 3.07 gears and a 3" lift. Located in Athens, Ohio I'd like to upgrade the axles, transmission & leave it stock otherwise. It's a beautiful truck and I have waited my whole life for this. LOL It will stay with me until one of us dies completely.
  10. Hey everyone! I'm James. 33m in SE Ohio. I've shuffled from sht box to sht box most of my life, due to high student loans. Got my hands on this 1989 Comanche and I don't think I will ever let go! My best friend since I was growing up has this XJ that she has kept running since she was 17 and she's 35 now... For years, she was telling me that these are the best shtboxes in the world, and I was always like... YAH OKAY... but now I get it. I've owned so many crap cars and this one is worth keeping. It's a 1989 4.0 5 speed 4wd short bed, originally from Colorado, but I bought it in PA. The bed is rhino lined, and the underside is lick-able... minus a few seals! It has the Peugeot BA10/5. Everyone talks about how they're terrible, but this one has 210000 and is likely on the original clutch and shifts just fine. It's the 3.07 gears and it gets 24.8 mpg if I am nice to it on the highway. It's on 33s with a 3" lift and the aligned is slightly wacked! I bet that mpg number will go up once I do all my pre-winter maintenance! I operate a small organic farm, I remove poison ivy and I work on pianos, so she does some work. My eventual plan is to have an AX15 for when the Peugeot dies. It seems that the general consensus is get steeper gearing, but I like my 3.07s. 25mpg is very nice, and I don't really plan on doing too much off-roading. My plan is to put a bigger rear axle with calipers in the rear & lockers in the front and back. But currently I just need a new Rear main, a valve cover, an oil pan gasket, both pinion seals, and a transfer case input shaft seal. Then I can worry about the future. It would be cool to meet anyone else in SE Ohio who's into Jeeps and doesn't mind someone who wasn't raised with a mechanic in the family! Otherwise I'll be over here fuxxing with this thing until I die. Thanks for the time. Peace!
