Hi, I'm pretty new here and have some questions for you guys. I have an 88 4.0 litre, five speed, 4wd, swb, pioneer, MJ. I want to get rid of the ba 10/5 before it blows up on me. It is already showing signs of failure, so its about time to replace it. I found a jy that has a 5-speed from a 2001 cherokee with a 4.0 litre and 4wd. If I'm not mistaken, this is an nv3550, right? Is there a way to identify that it is for sure? I don't want to end up with the wrong transmission and the NV1500, NV3500 and NV3550 all look similar. Is there a part number or some thing that I can check? Also, do I need to get the crossmember or will the one I have work? Are the bell housings different? Any other suggestions? That is the TPS (throttle positioning sensor) for an mj with an auto transmission. It's supposed to be on the throttle body.

Great write up. :thumbsup: Mabe we should do this before it breaks, that way with the bracket, it will be twice as strong.

I usualy take the bumper off the brackets in stead of taking the brackets off the unibody. Take the bolts out of the bottom of the bumper. There is also a bolt that goes from the bracket into the back of the bumper. Get a long extension and go from the wheel well forward. You probably need to feel around behind the bumper to find it. It's easier than taking out the other three.

4 cylinder cherokees didn't come with 4.10s until 86 with the "off-highway vehicle" package. And some (not sure when cut off was) came with CV joints instead of U-joints, The shafts from your current axle will slide right in or it is also a good time to swap in the later ones with bigger u-joints. I don't know it they slide right in but I don't see why they wouldn't. ps. 4cylinder cherokees are usualy hard to find. Good Luck

Hi, nice truck. I just had the gears done in my truck. I went with 3.73s also. To keep the cost down I swaped in a whole dana 30 front axle fron an 84 cherokee with a 4cylinder. It was cheaper to buy the whole axle from pick-n-pull than it was to puy new gears & have them installed. And a friend gave me his factory trac-loc with 3.73s from his TJ. That way all i had to pay to have installed was the rear gears/carrier. Just something to consider, but probably won't make a difference if you do it your self.
