88 Instrument Cluster Help
RNMashups replied to RNMashups's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yes, I decided that was for the best. I am actually waiting on a delivery of a '90 XJ cluster at the moment. Blue housing, full gauges. Here are a few images I took a few weeks ago before forgetting to post them. If anyone is reading this in the future, this is NOT the right one to get if you're looking to upgrade an automatic with no cruise control! Pic 1: the original dummy cluster on top. The 5 gauge cluster from an 86. Pic 2: closeup of the 86 speedo and the metal clip. Also shows how the metal housing is a bit taller than normal Pic 3: The speedo cable that wouldn't screw in all the way. This caused the internal rod not to spin. Pic 4: The top of the weird cluster. PB should mean "pretty bad" 😤 Pic 5: The other end of the speedo showing the old school metal end it had. This clicked right into that cluster...too bad it was all for not! -
88 Instrument Cluster Help
RNMashups replied to RNMashups's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Sorry, I'm going through my photos and coming up empty. My MJ is at a family members garage, but I plan on stopping by tomorrow so I'll take some pictures and post them. At the very least to help others not make the same mistake I did. After going back and re-reading previous posts about this swap, I do think I'm S.O.L. I'd rather get the right cluster and do it right then try and mix and match my mistake -
88 Instrument Cluster Help
RNMashups replied to RNMashups's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Right? That was the one I bought first. The problem is that plastic end does not fit the back of the gauge. It has the metal clip that locks the speedo cable in. I did forget to mention that I don't have cruise control, so it needs to be the full length. The problem is it seems the only ones that have the right end I need are the short 38" ones for cruise control setups. It's almost like I somehow found the perfect combination of items to make this impossible. -

I've got a 1988 4.0 automatic. RWD shortbed. A few months ago, I bought a cluster off of eBay to get rid of the dummy lights I have. What I didn't realize at the time was that I bought a cluster from an '86 XJ so the speedometer cable needed to be swapped as well. Since it was non-refundable, I decided to try and make it work because even if it was older, it would be an improvement if I could figure it out. I searched high and low and thought I had finally found the speedo cable to make it work. It was this Pioneer CA-3001 model. I installed the cable and my eBay cluster (and required sensor upgrades). Everything is working except the speedo. I checked the inner core of the cable and there is no movement when I hit the gas. I went back under and disconnected the cable and reattached it as tight as can be, but even so there are about 4 threads exposed which seems odd. My current theory is that this speedo cable does not sit far enough down on the housing to actually reach the gear housing, so nothing is engaging when I accelerate...but that's just my best guess right now. I suppose my question is...how far do I go from here? Has anyone else experienced this? I'd hate to have to buy another cluster just because I can't get the speedo cable to work right. But I also don't want to waste my time working on a bastardized setup that's not worth it in the long run. Where should I go from here?

40-More power for your 87 and 88 4.0

Uncle Jess the Jeep - More Power for your 87 and 88 4.0 I believe I found the video you're talking about. I had to screen grab it and repost it somewhere. Hopefully this works. I think Vimeo lets you download the video, too. If not, I can save it somewhere else like Google Drive and share it. -
Wow, checking google street view and the dealer is still there (although it's a collection of muffler and tire shops now). The one banner still has "Lazar's Auto" on it, though. Crazy! Thanks a lot for the information!

@fiatslug87 I think you missed adding mine to the registry this past round so figured I'd tag you for next time!

There was a similar discussion on Facebook not too long ago, so I posted what AI gave me. Not really much different than the original. AI must know that you don't mess around.

Thank you for any and all info, guys!

Hey, not a bad idea if I get frustrated enough! Am I supposed to tag someone to see if they can find the details on my VIN?
-
Thanks for the SEM info. That will definitely help in the future. I've already purchased a KeyParts cab corner for the passenger side damage. It definitely felt well made when I got it. Now I just gotta save up for those floor pans.

@89 MJ I may have to try painting a different color trim. That's assuming I can get the navy blue color (or something similar) that actually works well. It seems the posts I've read about painting trim have mixed results. I'm not a welder, so I was going to leave the floors alone. But now I'm thinking I can use 3M body panel adhesive and rivets on a new floor pan and not regret it.

1988 Jeep Comanche 4.0L 2WD SWB 4.0L / Automatic / 2WD / OEM axles (Dana 35's?) / SWB Build date: I'll have to check this. I forgot to write it down. Current Location: Western New York Status: It runs and drives, but it is a project truck (my first ever project car). It's sitting at a relatives heated garage getting worked on when I can find the time! I want to keep it as original as possible. Nothing crazy. Just as clean as possible with a few upgrades to make it more comfortable to drive. Notes: It's a bare bones automatic Comanche as far as I know. It's got the bench seat, but I recently swapped that out for bucket seats. I believe the truck has been white this whole time, but it's been painted over a few times...and not well. The interior is the less common blue color which makes finding interior trim difficult. The floor pans were replaced with street signs by the previous owner as you can see. It gets the job done but I will probably try replacing them soon enough. I was told it was a farm truck for a little while and it was at this time it sustained its damage. The B-Pillar, rocker and passenger door have a big dent in it from a t-bone accident at slow speed. Luckily, there is no frame damage and the frame is shockingly clean for being in New York. It seemed like it had solid potential so I snagged it for 1,500 bucks last April. Current owner: Haven't transferred the title yet, but it'll be in my name and at a relatives house until I get it to where I want it. Then it'll come home with me.
