I haven't been able to stop doing things long enough to log in lately, but I have accomplished so much I hope I can remember it all. But I think the biggest and most successful thing of them all that ties significantly with the mj, has to be the fishing trip with my 13 year old daughter thurs. evening. Just the 2 of us and a great time catching only 5 catfish between us in the 3 hours we got to spend at the lake. But we haven't gotten to do anything like that in a long time so it didn't matter how many we caught or didn't. It was all about the time spent with each other without others to bother us, or tell us what when why or how. We just fished and talked and that's the way we like it. The MJ ran great there and back. Another reminder that it is a he and not a she, it always runs better when my daughter is around. She liked the additions as in the automatic tranny, guage dash, interior floor lights, clock and other little things I've been adding here and there. I took some trailer side marker lights and wired them into the transmission control box and a ground so that they come on when whichever transmission solinoid has power the corresponding light is lit. I can instantly tell which gear the automatic is in. I did this at first to monitor the tranny on the initial test runs, but I liked it and made a mounting plate for them and kept it. the only trouble it has given me is the reverse now. If I am correct the transmission has a low and high reverse. It seems as if it is going directly into high reverse gear and it is hard to get it to move unless i rev it higher. But it's legal all the way around now.

...when in conversation with people you don't see every day you mention your truck. And everyone remembers it but one speaks for all and says "Now what kind of truck is yours again?"
-
Tinker with it every evening. The switch over to the automatic transmission is a done deal except some more permenant wiring needs to be done here and there.

when you hear the ol lady say "that thing" you know she's refering to the MJ. as in why don't you just get rid of that thing.
-
...when you are at the JY and you know they give a maximum of a couple of hundred for any vehicle they buy and you curse to yourself "I wish I could have found this one before them, I woulda gave double."

Oops, I meant to show the installation of the r-12 to 134a adapter and charging the system. But I lost my stinking cell phone with the pics on it. Sorry.
-
 Checked out the 134-A conversion. It will blow cold, but there is only so much it can do in an R-12 system. Mustang The Mustang got a new dash too.

Some painting in the engine compartment. Did the 134-a conversion on the A/C. Drove it around the block a few times. That's Grabber Green engine paint.

Sneaky Trial Ride reveals some problems.
Lloyd replied to Lloyd's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Well today after work I put her @$$ end up in the air on blocks and cranked her up and put it in drive. Took the speedometer to 65 mph. It shifted fine up to 3rd gear. Didn't want to hold it to see if the OD kicked in. Pretty much I would think that would eliminate the sway bar. Pulled both wheels and still had the vibration. So I left it in gear and watched the driveshaft. (Don't know how those dogs chase and bite tires, I was scared and I knew it wasn't going anywhere. LOL.) It appears to be rollng smooth at both ends but there is a noticable out of round wobble in the middle maybe a little more to the front. Like the whole thing is slightly bent. It came from the JY and I've seen that they carry the vehicles to the yard after the fluid and catalytic converter removal with a big forklift. Most likely that is when it got bent. Fortunately it came from U-Pull-It and they give a 6 month warranty and I'm sure I saved that receipt. I called a few places to see what a balance would cost, only one place I could find and they wanted over $100.00. The driveshaft itself was only 34.95. So I'll be taking it back and hope I can find another one. But I'm going to keep the new U-joints and put the old ones back in it. But how would I check the sway bar when I put it all back together again?? :hmm: -
Of course with the limited cash flow I tend to check and recheck before commiting to anything. Like insurance, registration, etc. So last night I snuck the MJ out to the back roads. This revealed that it tries to shift right but I still have some things to connect correctly on the wiring. What was that link that had the wiring diagrams?? :help: I didn't take her too fast because another problem showed itself. At about 35 mph it gets a bad vibration. Looks like I need to get this driveshaft balanced first thing. I'll get it there though. :ack:

Yeah, I got the picture to work.

What haven't I done?? Haven't been able to get on the computer lately because I have been hard at it for awhile every evening. Trying to find my easiest route to post the pictures (not trying all that hard, but trying.). There won't be as many as I'd like, and I only have the camera phone to use. I got the automatic transmission in and working. I was so excited to have it moving the first time in almost 3 years I drove it around the block by reaching with a metal bar through the floor to shift into gear. Had a friend who works at a Jeep dealership in Ft. Worth bring me a floor shifter and cable. Well, he brought the right shifter anyway, and a throttle cable. LOL. So went back to the JY(U-Pull-It, Elm Mott, TX) Got the shifter right cable, and the mount for the shifter I didn't know I was going to need. Also got the Upgrade cluster with Guages instead of "idiot lights". Saw much more that I wanted. A cherry of an 86' Comanche. Had a camper shell I'd love to have, and a pristine interior. Absolutely beautiful to a fan, red interior w/bucket seats. But I took out my carpet and sanded out the rust, covered the floor with undercoating. Took the carpet to the carwash and powered out as much of the dirt and grime as I could. (I'm a poor boy on a budget, love my daughters but child support takes a good bite of the weekly pay) Put it all together and the instrument cluster changed. Snagged a digital clock insert. Now looking for the easiest and cheapest insurer, then tags and inspection and she'll be my only transpo for awhile. One of my first other than work destinations is the scrap metal yard to sell some old radiators and catalytict converters that have been accumilating, and other odds and ends to try and get enough money to get the Buick fixed so I can have 2 vehicles going. When I get the patience to sit here and do it, I'll be posting the pics I have so far.. Thanks to all who have helped me with advice and instructions. I'm going to go through all my bolts now with a bit of locktite. Now that I'm sure of the assembly working. I really can't explain how grateful I am to this site and the people on here who give freely of their knowledge and experience. Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got lots of info from here using the links and posts. Laid up under the truck and examined the best possible way to stick the tranny back in since the torque converter seal replacement. Stabbed the tranny. Took a few hundred breaks in between.

Thank You to everyone offering help to this. I made it back to the junk yard and the MJ was still there, minus a few parts but nothing that I needed. I got all the parts I needed except the TPS, Floor shifter and cable. The work is going slowly due to the time frames I have to work in and the weather sometimes not cooperating. And the family and friends who also need help. Some are priority, such as brother-in-law that had a heart attach recently, but is getting better needing his chevy truck worked on. Or younger sister's Grand Am. After I get it moving and legalized I see my next effort being the instument cluster swap. Thanks again for all the help. Only in a Jeep Lloyd

I am a fairly new member on here and have found your restification pictures and information absolutely awe inspiring. Incredibly informative. I got my 91' MJ 2 wheel drive LWB for $325, and drove it home!!!!! It has been a reliable ride until I spent more money and attention to the girl friend I had at the time. I neglected to replace a bad U-joint, and during a late night ride home listening to her nagging and whining I downshifted and hit the gas rounding a corner to try and get her to lessen the whining at least and dropped the driveshaft. It knocked the driveshaft out of balance and as I continued with that girl friend a little more then replaced her with a close friend of her's, I neglected to get it rebalanced. The vibration shook bolts loose in a few places and I ended up breaking the bellhousing. But I am working on getting it back together. I love working on it and the more I work on it the more I like it. And currently it is alot easier to put up with than either of the women. I work on it most evenings and weekends when the weather cooperates and the pay check allows. I work at Forest River Texas division, and head up the Living Quarters dept. And sometimes work donates things here and there, i.e., silicone caulk, fuses, wire loom, etc. I install a living quarters in cargo trailers, a complete 12 volt system for when they are away from a plug in spot. Thanks for posting your project, Doing the work yourself is the best teacher... but your posts are a very close second. Great job!!! Nice Ride.

The pump sock is a problem I had also. But I had bought a new pump before I realized it, so now I have a spare good pump that just needs a sock if I ever need it. I also had a problem with the catalytic converter. Took it off and hollowed it out by driving a 3/4 inch x 4 foot piece of pipe through it a few times. -
Had a simular problem with my 91'. The "after it is warm" clue pretty much signify's the problem I had and your's are most likely the same and i had to replace the hydralic line and it solved the problem. My old worn line was expanding when the heat would warm it up.

I had the automatic transmission all the way installed in place of the manual transmission driveshaft and all. Took it back off to see what the fluid poured out of the front for, and found the torque converter seal was mangled and the sleeve was worn. I made sure the pump was lined up when installing it.I will try again with new seals. I have the transmission control box and the wiring harness to it, the power/comfort dashboard switch(wiring for it was already behind a blank panel). Conected to the control box wiring is the wiring to the transmission. An open plug in by the fuse box where I suspect but will research to be sure that is where i will be wiring the other hook-up. I think I can make this swap happen. If the neighbors will quit calling the cops every time I crank the truck with the muffler not hooked up that is. Who the hell goes to bed at 8 pm??

Put a windshield wiper switch in, which involved pulling the steering wheel and componets down to the bare column. Looked at the situation with putting the automatic transmission in where it was a manual transmission before and wondered "Am I going to be able to do this?"
-
Switching transmissions in my 91' Comanche from a manual to an AW-4 automatic. I had enough time to grab the switch on the dash that says power or comfort for the tranmission. The junk yard was closing and I had only a borrowed vehicle. The wiring was already in my truck for it behind the blank panel they had in it's place. I hope the truck I got the tranny out of is still there when I get a chance to head back to the junk yard. In any case can anyone tell me where the control componets are located that I need to get for the electronically controlled transmission. And what exactly do they do? I'm stoked to get it back going again. I had a U-joint failure at one time that knocked my driveshaft out of balance and I neglected to get it balanced. It vibrated the bolts loose on my bellhousing and it ended up breaking the bellhousing. I had looked for a while for just a bellhousing that would fit and was within my budget to no avail. So whenI was at the junkyard looking for other things I was suprized to find a truck like mine except for the automatic. Any feedback is much appreciated. Only in a Jeep, Lloyd
