  1. Started some cleaning on the red one and broke the negative battery cable and have a new rattling sound coming from underneath, so I going to run through some of the Cruiser54 tips list. Also took a minute to start digging into the white one some more. I got the trim, nasty carpet, and the "stripped bolt" out, not really sure what the last owner was doing, but it looks dumb. Not too happy with what i'm finding right off the bat with these but it feels good to get some progress on projects i want to get done.
  2. So this started out as a temp rig as i fixed up my original car and i needed a truck at the time, but it turned into my dd as i like it alot more. I bought this 1989 rwd sportruck a little over two years ago, it ran pretty good and came with a canopy, only one little rust spot in the corner of the windshield, a few scratches and dings, and it's losing some good chunks of the clear coat. I've only done some basic maintenance, changed the shocks, and cleaned and repainted the front plastic, trim, and bumper. Also got one of those headliners through the guy that was posting on here and cleaned the interior up a bit. It was owned by an old farmer so its got a scratched up bed too and was then passed around by some mechanics as a project that mostly just sat around, but all in all I've found it to be in great shape. It got me from the peninsula to Montana and back, around 1700-1800 mile round trip and it only leaked a couple gallons of oil and it's still my dd(suddenly started leaving big puddles about half way to Montana, after driving it bit hard when it was about 100 degrees out, but it stopped about as suddenly). I've been on the hunt since then for parts to stock up for a rebuild/upgrade, I had to pass on the parts truck I posted on here about awhile back as life $#!& happened and my money went every which way, but I've finally made some progress and found myself a second project rig. I picked up a 1990 4x4 with a UTE aluminum flatbed, upgraded leafs, d30 front, d35 rear, ax15 5 speed manual, rebuilt clutch, new wheel hubs, new brakes, and a few other new parts. Great deal, but it is someone else's unfinished project with a few problems, it has a stripped bolt on the end of the crank, no seats whatsoever or most of the interior, and it took a solid whack to the dome from a good sized branch. This was supposed to be a parts rig as it had most of what i wanted and some cool bonuses (also including the slider back window, spotlight, full set of ten hole rims, working window regulators, ect.), but after looking it over a bit and thinking it over I'm just gonna fix up both as money allows. I've grown attached to the red one and don't want to cannibalize it or swap the bed, and wanted camping/work rig anyway. So the red one is first, it's getting a basic restore, repaint, and upgrades/fixes (gonna follow some of the guides here on cc), and the white one will get more customized/modded (leaning towards a small lift and a diesel engine down the line). This thread will follow the red ones restore and maybe the bodywork of both as I want to get the white one sealed back up before rot and such set in. Making room in the garage and works going to be slow for a bit though, so the next post might be awhile, I was just lurking and researching so I thought I'd throw up the starting point.
  3. Came with the truck. Not sure what it is can't find any info stickers or names.
  4. It didn't look like its been on the road for awhile, but could be worth saving still. And yeah, i don't have or have access to a welder right now and i've never fitted anything, mostly basic maintenance and parts replacement. So going for the MJ seems like the plan. I'll do my best to save the old one, though from what i see on these forums putting a Ba-10 and dana 35 back on it won't make anyone too excited to get it. And if i part it out, i've seen 3 more MJ's driving around town, though they seem to be in just as good or better condition then mine.
  5. I just did a similar trip from the peninsula to east glacier, though it was in 100 degree weather. having several quarts of oil saved me, thought my rear main went out at first but i think it was just high case pressure because it stopped leaking on its own. i did the full fluid change before the trip like these guys have said and it ran fine other the the oil leak.
  6. Hi, newbie here looking for some advice on upgrading my Ba-10/rwd to a anything else/4wd. This is my first truck and first jeep and being an amatuer mechanic i'm unsure on the price vs. worth when buying parts. I'm thinking about picking up a parts/project comanche for around $1500 because it's a '89 4wd longbed with what looks to be a stock d44/d30 setup, havent seen it in person yet only a few pics(bit of a drive and i'm going to need to rent a trailer) so i'm just hoping it has the MT leafs and an ax-15 or aw-4("it's automatic" was all i got). You guys think the actual MJ parts are worth it or should i just be picking up a donor xj for half the $ or less and making the parts work? Also, it has a non-running 4.0L and not sure how bad the rust is.
