  1. Worked on the Comanche for a while today. It looks like the extent of the rot is far worse than I had thought. Someone did an "awesome" job disguising it with bondo. The floors aren't too horrible, but the outer rocker on both sides is pretty much shot (constructed almost entirely of bondo and what appears to be duplicolor bedliner) and the pinch welds are rotting away. Not sure what to do.
  2. Picked up the ZJ box today. $53.25 out of a 98 ZJ. Does anyone know if I can use the pitman arm that came on the ZJ steering box? I thought about the Durango box, but the ZJ box was nearly half the price. The LWB Comanche is so long that I'm not going to play on the rocks like I did with my TJ. I'm looking at a 4" lift and 31's when things are caught up around the house. The ZJ box should turn 31's just fine and Ohio isn't exactly known for its rocks.
  3. Would the donor ZJ have the same spacer? Is it something i can order from JCWhitney or Quadratec?
  4. opps. Forgot the screen shots.
  5. Going to try to do a grand cherokee steering box swap on the MJ, since I'm off work today. Tried calling the local boneyard to see if they had one, but got stuck on hold for too long and gave up, so I had a look at their website. You guys think these are what I'm looking for, or PS pumps? Edit, got them one the phone. They lady seemed a little clueless, but said they she's pretty sure it's the box. Here's what she said her computer is telling her. Do I want the spd proportional steering, or are they all that way? Power Steering, Laredo Power Steering, Limited (w/spd proportional strg

  7. What about just using the flywheel off of the donor engine?
  8. I would guestimate a 7-10 year lifespan. Not too much different than the soft top that I had on my wrangler, and it was 7 years old before the window zippers started falling apart. And the soft tonneau on my ranger lasted 10 years. I'd love to have one of these. Too bad they're so expensive.
  9. Interesting. I pull the radio fuse and the radio goes off. I pull the dome light fuse and the radio goes off :huh???: Not sure what's going on. Still no power to the dome lights, pulled the stock lights off and poked the connectors with my multi meter.
  10. From what I gather, it's not as good. The 231 is geared a little lower and the cut of the gears is different. Not much better, just more refined.
  11. I don't remember it being much louder in the TJ. But then a TJ with 33k on the odometer is goign to be quieter than an MJ with 133k on it. I should check the fluid levels though.
  12. That's what I was looking for. I'd seen one somewhere and wasn't sure if it was mechanical or not. Now I've got my answer. Thanks.
  13. Read up about the home brew posi lock and think I might go through with it this weekend. I want it to look like it is supposed to be there. Has anyone had any luck using the 2/4 lever off of an NP-242 jeep? I've got the 207 (might upgrade to a 231), so that spot on the console should be blank.... Any input before I go hunting for one. 14. Will it be stamped in the carier, like on the TJ, if I just pop the cover on the axle?
  15. It seems noisier in 4hi than it does in 2hi....? I just need to keep my eyes out for a 231.
  16. So the axels could be 3.73s or 4.10s with the V6 and Ax-5? Any way to tell? The little tags on the covers are rusted too badly to read.
  17. 86 MJ, 2.8L, ax-5 The 231 in my TJ was relatively quiet, the 207 in my MJ is very whiney. Is this normal? Does the 207 run ATF like the 231?
  18. Sounds like a TPS to me.
  19. Could it be the steering box? I would think a steering box would do it with the jeep stopped.
  20. The comanche didn't do it when I first brought it home last week, this is a new sound. When I go full turn to the left there is a horrific grinding sound. I don't get it when turnign to the right, not even a little. I've checked the basics: the tires aren't rubbing the transfer case is in 2H It's not the power steering pump Any ideas?
  21. While we're on steering boxes........I remember that the TJ guys were big on swapping the dodge durango steering boxes into their wranglers and some of the XJ guys were swapping them into the XJ's with little modification. Will one drop into a 1986 Comanche?
  22. Here's my 86. I was going crazy from not having a jeep in the driveway and the MJ fit the bill when it came to hauling building materials for my kitchen remodel. It's got the 2.8L, ax-5, NP-207, and a Dana 35. I suppose I didn't do too bad for $1200. The rockers are worse than originally thought, oh well, guess I'll try to replace them in the spring. The bed is mostly rust free.
  23. Been jeepin' for a while, but new to Comanches. I'm used to a 4cly TJ with a 3spd automatic, so the v6 Comanche is a little different and I have a few questions. 1) I've read horrible things about the floors rusting out. Is there a good way to pull the carpet and still be able to put it back in when I'm done checking the floor? 2) Where can I get a soft Tonneau cover for the bed of a 1986 MJ? I found a fiberglass cap on craigslist l for $50, but it's way too much like work taking a cap off when I want to haul something big. 3) Where can I get replacement rocker panels? The cancer isn't too horrible, someone just did a real bad job bondoing the rockers, so cutting them out and replacing will be easiest. 4) I'm used to fuel injection and a torque converter, are there aftermarket carbs for the 2.8? I am accustomed to watching my CJ friends struggle to keep carb'd engines running on a steep incline. 5) Is there a good source for headliners? 6)I know how awesome the Dana 35 is, and never could break one on the TJ, so I am prepared to live with it. I'm getting too old to be tearing stuff up and don't plan on running big tires, I got that out of my system with the TJ. My research indicates that the V6/ax-5 combo will most definitely be backed up by 3.55 gears, correct? 7) The drop in bed liner annoys me. Is there a good way to work around the bed tie downs when herculining? 8) My brother's '94 XJ has a rod knocking and the front is bashed in, so he'll probably be parting it out soon. Will the NP-231 easily replace the NP-207 8.5) Skid plates. Will an XJ transfer case skid bolt right on? 9)Anyone know where to get a diagram for the fuse box? None of the labels are readable and I want my flippin dome lights to work.
