  1. what are your compression numbers? any rod knock? i havent ran any compression numbers on it in a long while. there is rod knock, i thought it was a blown gasket, which was blown, but the knocking still continued after the gasket changeout(though not as loud.) the truck sat for 4 years with fluids in it, and ive spent this past 2 years trying to do what i can without plucking it out and getting into it (since I'm ill-equip for such jobs currently.) but its just become a money pit. this is my main vehicle, need to get it 100 asap. ill save the core and rebuild the engine myself while using a factory reman engine to drive the truck. low hp, a bog from 1-3rd gear, rod knock, won't pass smog anymore, lower gas mileage, spitting smoke occasionally, rough idle, not counting other issues like the clutch deciding to start acting up. and this is whats left after a ton of work.
  2. Gonna do a bit of a thread hijjak on this since its right along the lines of info I'm looking for. engine of my 87 4.0 has lots of little faults and its just not cost effieciant to dump anymore more money unless i rebuild the motor. don't have the space or tools currently to rebuild, tho i plan on setting up the space next year after i move on this land I'm buying. therefore i plan on keeping my core and rebuilding the engine on my own. so i will need to replace without the option of rebuilding the current one, since my comanche is a daily, and need to be running 100% before my move. thinking a titan. was gonna use a atk since its cost friendly but the mixed reviews leave me wary. tho S&J engines looks cost friendly as well. so any other solid engine suggestions would be appreciated. also would it be worth it to swap to the ax15 from the BA-10 while i do this? sorry to hijack, but seemed pointless to make a new thread when a somewhat recent one has popped up.
  3. ok so i tried a tap from the radio as well, nothing. what could be causing a loss of control voltage? i jumper the control side it fires up no problem. kinda stumped :::edit::: problem solved. was a silly mix up on my end. swapped my control wires. was checking over it and realized what happened.
  4. I am currently wiring in a bypass switch for the aux fan. I have everything wired via basic relay, but I'm not getting power to my switch or relay. I jumped the relay from 87-30 and the fan came on. My switch has a light on it to indicate that its on, and I'm not getting power. I have tried a couple fuse locations varying from constant to ignition. Any help to power this swtich would be much appreciated. the simple relay schemetic i used. http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/Electrical/RelayBasics.htm
  5. got an 87 4.0 5 speed manual that is idling high (up to 3000-3500) at startup. I had this happen on the last trip i took, and i found a leak in my vacuum line. since that the issue hasnt shown its face. recently it started happening again, but it is only temporary and if i restart the truck, it will sometimes go away. aside from vacuum lines, what else could be causing this? Thanks in advance for any help.
  6. ya i noticed they were beat when i was intstalling the overhaul springs. definitely on my list of things to replace with this one.
  7. ya ima start the saving and researching for a overhaul on the suspension. just threw on the overload springs. brought her back up to about stock height.(~3/4 of an inch) much better(though there still is a slight sag). still would like to get a little bit more clearance when i do the full upgrade on the suspension though. as for my art, i tend to lean more toward geometric patterns and mandalas. here's one of my more recent pieces. anyone interested can check me out on facebook or instagram https://www.facebook.com/TiskONER http://instagram.com/tisk_oner thanks for the help thus far guys. now to start plotting what to do suspension wise, and get a general price in my head.
  8. prob gonna go the route of just replacing the leaf springs. possibly grab the ones from general spring, since theyve been brought up twice, and the price doesnt seem like a break bank scenario. I'm on the road now, so ill end up swinging by auto zone and getting an overload spring set till i can get the new ones, and get to a place to work. though the add a leaf seems like the cheaper route. only reason I'm thinking of the full swap is that the truck sat for YEARS before i started working on it. last trip i told myself that ima have to start figuring out a suspension overhaul. @dave yes thats pressure treated wood. ripped it down, and used it as a spacer for a little extra head room (I'm 6'2'') and to help bring the cab lines together. sorry for the delayed response, ive been all over the place these past few days.
  9. as of right now i can swing prob 200-400. was eyeballing some leaf upgrades for 62$ till i can overhaul the whole setup. or a whole new leaf setup for like 250$ the back is converted to living quarters with bed and storage, nothing i can get rid off. since I'm a traveling artist, i have my entire art studio back there, plus a bed and kitchen supplies. as for overload springs, something like this? http://www.sdtrucksprings.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1324
  10. been teaching myself about trucks with my comanche. I'm at a loss on suspension. I'm not trying to build a crawler. i wanna build a daily driver that can get to some good camping spots. I'm always on the road, so I'm constantly set up in the jeep. recently found a shell, and have loaded her down with gear for a long trip. noticed a sag from being weighted and decided a suspension upgrade was needed. id like to keep it cost efficient, maybe even piece together what would help now and upgrade in the future. ive been thinking about doing a leaf upgrade from rustys offroad. any tips would be greatly appreciated.
  11. did the cooling system swap today. just a temp overflow tank till i move some relays and what not out the way. runa great at a cool 180-190 on the cluster.
  12. planning a trip through oregon sometime soon, will double my purpose and pick up near ashland oregon or en route from las vegas. would love to find myself a topper. ::edit:: pending sale in OR.
  13. if you ever decide to get rid of that bench. let me know :jump:
  14. awesome! really can't wait to upgrade out of the closed system. see how she runs after it. may have to go stretch that 4x4 when shes on point again. some desert romping.
  15. So a little back story on this MJ of mine. My grandfather bought this when it came out. he drove it unit the late 90s when he passed. my father then claimed it and drove it while he was putting himself through college as an adult. during this time i was 15 and he took me out to a dried lake and taught me to drive in this truck. my father drove it till 06 when he snagged a new pickup. The poor girl sat for 4-5 years at this point. I had a little VW i was driving, so my father fixed the jeep to run (barely) as a work truck for his new company. they drove it hard for the next couple years. they park it. I have some issues with the VW and get rid of it, and claim the jeep. During this time I'm getting my career as an artist off the ground, so i manage to keep the jeep running ok (barely as well) flash forward a year, and I'm doing ok in my art. so i can now start to revive the family truck. so here she is currently. As some may may have seen, ive been having issues with my cooling system (aux fan and now a hole in radiator) so i have everything in shambles as i fix it. also trying to clean up the rats nest called electrical in this truck. i have the lower dash out, as i try and sort through some of the messy wiring and clean it up. the headliner i installed not too long ago. was fed up with the dust on my head. and the mess of an engine I'm in the process of cleaning up and getting to run on point. aside from a rebuild, ive done about all i can to the engine itself(aside from cooling). had my fathers mechanic do a compression test and go through and get it sound. saving to snag a second engine and tranny to start rebuilding.
  16. thanks for the tip, pmd him on a couple parts I'm looking for
  17. Ya I was planning on going that route, since i already have the rad out. might as well upgrade and avoid some of these common problems that plague the closed system. Currently stockpiling conversion guides and rounding up a part list.
  18. Vegas! I've seen a handful of Comanches wandering around the valley. Only four that I see often.
  19. yes to all those steve. been already bouncing around the forums looking at radiator upgrades. thinking ima go ffd (emailed them and asked if i can get one without the fans and shrouds.waiting to hear back) like hornbrod's. three years and still going strong, plus all aluminum. i wanna do all i can for this cooling system since I'm in vegas, and even when i move ill be at high elevation in CO.
  20. bump. still on the hunt.
  21. that wildernest tho. need to get me one! beautiful
  22. so I'm gonna upgrade the cooling system since my radiator is bad. is it advised that i just move to an electric fan for my main fan, or should i just replace the clutch? ::edit:: after much more searching I'm opting for a swap. thanks for all the help everyone. really appreciate everything.
  23. officially found the problem. a pinhole in my radiator, i drove it long enough that it started to get past the 225 range on my cluster. parked it popped the hood, the pressure caused the pinhole to spread, and a visible leak became apparent
  24. just did the cold spin test on the mechanical clutch fan. got a 1/8-1/4 rotation cold. and about 1/2 rotation warm. i read that they shouldnt have play (IE be able to rotate back and forth)(it doesnt have play like a bad motor for say an ac unit) is this true? it appears to grab around 225 and kick in higher to drop the temp down to 200-210, according to my cluster. that being said it sounds like its doing all it needs to do. is there any other way to test it?
  25. I'm in vegas atm. House hunting in co. So looking to make the jump soon. And yes, i tested the aux fan via battery, was running strong. Didnt know about the police package Cherokee. Good little bit if info. Gonna start plotting a possible bypass switch today if I can't get it to kick in.
