Yep! Hoping for the best :)

Many thanks for trying to help me. Unfortunately I reached the limit of my knowledge, time, and patience so I sent it in to a garage and someone who actually knows what they are doing.

Ok sorry.... correction. When I say "pretty sure I had good connections", I should have said "not sure" . I just did it again and got readings of .6 and it hung in about .8 while still in a no-start mode. I hope this means the CPS is ok. I do actually like the idea of trying it myself sometime but also I'll admit, "the older I get, the colder I get". Doing it for the first time while lying on the frozen ground, (even with new curse words ready), really doesn't appeal. If I can put it off for a few months it would be better. Thanks for that offer but since I am in Canada, and the fact that I use it for plowing and need to sort this out before the next snowfall, I think the timing with shipping isn't good. So, attaching spare coil didn't help CPS tests good too dark to look at distributor today :( Tomorrow, try to get a no-start when I can have help checking spark
-
I ran it for about 10 min again today and it quit again. I brought the multimeter with me and I tested the CPS when it wouldn't start and got a zero reading. Could this be right? Going from a great reading to 0? I'm pretty sure that I had good connections. It seems heat related and I also tried another coil I had around, but no luck. Haven't yet been able to test for spark in the no-start scenario but tomorrow will have a friend here so that should help. And....MiNi....... I will look at the distributor but it stalled inconveniently and too far away. Once I get it started (hopefully) and get it closer I'll try that too.
-
Thanks for walking me through this guys. I'll have some time tomorrow to try again
-
Could the CPS test show different results in a no-start situation compared to when it starts fine? When I tested, it was in a good phase where it seemed to start .......that's when i tested. Then it ran well for about 10 or 15 minutes while I drove around and pushed some snow for a bit, but then it quit and wouldn't start for an hour or two. This seems to be a pretty consistent pattern. I'll have to jump on testing for spark as soon as it quits obviously.

Yes, hit and miss but mostly hit today. Starts and restarts pretty well. I think I'll go at cleaning all connections. Maybe the distributor cap is dirty inside like you say :)
-
I think that was it. I used alligator clips and got a reading. It started at .4 then fluctuated between .6 and .8 Is this ok or too much? I know .5 is ideal. Should I check the coil next?
-
Ok, as long as my multimeter is set properly, I'll work on getting a better connection with the pins. I feel sure it's the right connector. I assume you pin the paper clip right onto the connector pin? I'll try that today. Tomorrow I may have someone to help.
-
Ok thanks. I'll try that tomorrow. I guess I'm still having trouble understanding the terms. I did think cars run on DC, but was going by this on Cruisers site: DUH! What am I missing?

Ya, I got it on sale after hearing so much about those electrical gremlins. This is the first time I've needed it and definitely wish that I'd tried to learn it during the summer when it was more pleasant weather! And you're right about getting a new CPS. I'll see if i can find one next time I go into town. Even if this issue turns out to be something else, good to have it around and when it warms up I can learn to install it.
-
Well, you guys don't realize what a novice you're dealing with. So before anything I tried again this morning and it started fine and was pretty consistent in restarting, except for once. Cleaned the CPS connectors and I tried to get a reading, but think I must have something set wrong. Is this the correct way to hook it up? Mostly nothing happened except once it jumped from zero to read .4 but then flashed back to 0.00. Appreciate you guys bearing with me.

Thanks for the encouragement .... I'll try the testing first. Winter, no indoor work space, and being an old geezer make it a daunting prospect though.
-
Today project: finally learn to use that multimeter. I'm really hoping it's not that I need a new CPS. That's beyond my capabilities I'm afraid
-
Thanks ... that's a good idea. I will do that tomorrow. I'm beginning to think about the coil too because just as I was quitting for the day, I tried it again and .... it started! I ran it for about 5 min and it revved fine and I even backed up a foot or two. Then I shut it off, and no start again. Maybe I didn't let it cool off long enough before. I had this once on another truck where it wouldn't start unless the coil was totally cold. Not sure if that would cause it to quit while running though.
-
I let it cool and wiggled connectors but no luck. Now no start even with the spray. Also double checked that I have fuel. Is there a way I can check for spark if I'm on my own?
-
Thanks! Not too much of an angle luckily...... but will go now and start wiggling and checking distributor. I'll check for spark but I assume so because it did fire with starting spray

Hi folks, Having a problem with my 89 4 litre. It's been working fine and just now while plowing snow it quit. And won't start again. Plenty of battery and I did get it to fire a short time by using some starting spray, but it wouldn't keep running. Now it won't fire at all even with that, or a bit of gas poured in the intake. I jumped the ballast resistor even though I didn't think that was it, because it understand if that's the issue, it'll start and quit right away. I can hear the fuel pump running for a second or two like usual when I go to start it but it just turns over and won't fire. It's in an awkward snow bank right now so not easy to get to anything. I'm not a mechanic so the next step is a tow truck unless I can find something easy and obvious. Any suggestions? thanks

Plus, no angling feature and only attached to a 2" receiver. Even the "extreme plowing" video shows only an inch or two of snow. It looks like it would be better on an atv really.
-
I have an 89 5 speed 4.0. I don't plow commercially but I love it for doing my property and the neighours. I have a 7.5 ft blade on it and never had any problem (when the truck is working properly!) pushing huge wet snowfalls and the smaller truck size is handy in tight spaces. As with everything, you just can't act like an idiot without consequences ☺

Thanks. Just finished refreshing the main ground (no change) and will get some new sockets for the front.
-
Is there a way to tell which one is bad? And, should I be replacing the rear ones too?
-
Hi! I am hoping that I can get some advice to avoid a trip to the garage for what seems simple. I have very limited knowledge but am willing to follow instructions :) So, here's what I know. The passenger side rear turn signal doesn't blink. The passenger front signal light comes on but stays steady. The driver’s side works and blinks fine, front and back. Hazards blink for the other three, but the rear passenger side doesn't. I changed the bulb and also swapped the hazard flasher for the turn flasher but no change. Then I tried a turn flasher from another Jeep. None of the flashers were new, but they all had the same results. Also, when I turn on the parking lights, that bulb will glow (one filament). That's about as far as I can go by myself :( Any suggestions? Thanks

Maybe a bit off topic but when I got my 89, the bumps on the ignition key were pretty much worn off. Didn't seem to make a difference and now by chance I find it will start just fine without any key at all! How can this be?
-
Could it have been the ballast resistor?

Ha! I'm glad to be in the same boat as one of our gurus :)
