Since retiring I am putting the SBC into a 2 wheel drive 86 Comanche. This is to see how the uniframe reacts to the engine and 700R4.
Already have the ford 9 inch with adjustable front suspension. Planning to put in a AX15 with Bronco dana 20 transfer case. Got the donor Comanche to swap in all the parts I will need I hope.
I hope I plan well the change to the 5.7 took a year of planning.
You have contact methods I use gmail phone or face to face

1987 Metric tonne speedo cable
kekaha988 replied to hakukamana's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Hozit go to Rock Auto go to Jeep go to 1987 go to Comanche go to 4.0L engine go to Interior check the speedo cable there. You got to know what or how the end of the speedo is because there are 2 type the old chevy knid and the newer with clip. Time to crawl under to see what you got best way to get more room is to remove the driver seat. sorry about that this is for the guy above looking for new speedo cable -

All ready acknowledge WRONG But this is what I write call it what you want it still smells the same. First generation up to 1990 you can not us newer 1991 and newer ECU. So my prose ain't that good but you got the picture. A 1990 is the last year of the first generation of Comanche. A lot of things changed like no manual cable for the speedo the ECU does not interact with the Instrument Cluster the wires harness is easier to trace there are 2 ECUs one for the automatic transmission and one for the rest. The one for the rest that ECU is located under the dash driver side and is a b*@$£ to pull, you can not exchange ECU from 1991 on into the 1990 but you can try the 84 to 90 but it has been my experience that nothing works till you try All auto MJ have a TCU under the dash. The 91-92 MJ is a High Output OBD-I setup. That is why the ECU will not work with a RENIX. That is what I write not interchangeable with newer Comanche's Good Luck Try Rock Auto for parts, parts in Hawaii is up there they tell us it's the shipping but it is just corporate greed. I use Rock Auto as an interchange catalogue did you know that a 1988 chevy S10 has the same power steering unite as the Comanche all the hoses are the same. I only own vehicles that have 4.0 or 4.2 and them I have converted to SBC. I have worked on vehicle with the V6 and 4. So at the jeep assembly line a frame goes down the line and oh by the way lets use 2 different power steering unites. Only the 2.5 and 2.8 Chevy power steering pumps will work on the 2.5 or 2.8 powered Jeeps. If you have a 4.0 the pumps will not work. You need to check I write power steering unit and high pressure hose are a match go check. I know because my Comanche has the power steering pump off an 88 S-10. The high pressure hose is off the 88 Comanche the power steering unite is OEM Comanche. So two wrongs and all that I know I am wrong on the door panel. Lets move on Get to know me I can really screw up. Check youtube look up Comanche using transfer case shifter then for the 700R4 that is me. -

I am wrong I step outside cause I had to go some place. One look at my Comanche I knew WRONG in my defense (as there is one) I was thinking about my old 2 door Cherokee. If you read I mention that I had a 1999 but crow does not taste any better If you want to see what I have done to my Comanche go to youtube look up Comanche using transfer case shifter then for the 700R4 that is me. It is my daily driver, company vehicle. -
Another HO harness swap question..
kekaha988 replied to WiscoXJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You should look for a wiring manual not the chipo Chilton but the one that shows all the circuits. Power, ground engine fuel injectors etc. A book that shows the wire size and color I pickup on craigslist just such book. It is called Electrical Troubleshooting 1988 Cherokee/Wagoneer look for your year. That one of craigslist was not cheap I also found my year 1988 on ebay look for the orange color ones. Good hunting A word these books are great I studied it, it helped, they are hard to decipher take your time. I spent time with the book the harness on the garage floor, for 2 weeks each evening it worked great no problems in my harness -

All these guys are wrong a door panel off any 4 door Cherokee will not work you, you need one off another Comanche or 2 door Cherokee. Go take out all your tape measures see for yourselves. He is the only one who is wrong. A 2 door panel is about 6" longer than a MJ door and it will NOT work. I used the door panels from a 1999 2 door Cherokee it is a tough fit also the outside mirror almost everything off the 1999 body wise works. The doors will not bolt in but it was nice I took out the one piece window tried as I might it did not work so it was back to the vent window The doors will bolt on. There are probably 25 trucks on here with the newer doors installed. The only modification needed is installing the newer style striker in the B pillar. I know this is correct because I have the newer doors on my 89. A 1990 is the last year of the first generation of Comanche. A lot of things changed like no manual cable for the speedo the ECU does not interact with the Instrument Cluster the wires harness is easier to trace there are 2 ECUs one for the automatic transmission and one for the rest. I used Rock to get a clutch hydraulic master cylinder and slave for my Comanche that I am changing over to Muncie 4 speed oh yes I did I put a SBC into my Comanche 108 more cubes 3 more miles per gallon Go to youtube put in Comanche transfer case look for the 700R4 let me know what you think all of you -

Far from being a dead subject long passed or OP (what ever that means) racing, adding into a car a bigger engine where a smaller one is. That goes back to when 2 men looked at each other at anyplace the first race was on. Then they went out put in bigger whatever the next race was again. I learned from my dad and the family 57 Chevrolet station wagon with 3 on the tree. I watch him change the brakes pack the wheel bearing and more. When I got back from Vietnam in 66 I drove the family VW. A few days later I went pass the junk yard there sat a 57 2 door sedan Bel Air, a true Bel Air with all the stainless steel trim and a straight as can be. It had no engine no trans and no pumpkin. With the separation money given to me from the Army. I was the new owner of a black 57 Bel Air 283 power pak heads Duntov 30-30 cam a Rochester 4 barrel and a T10 transmission. A year later it was running a 396 Sig cam 550 lift a Muncie M-22 and a 9 inch with 4.56 gearing. Did not get you anyplace fast it was hell stop light to stop light. As soon as management gets back to me about up-loading pictures I will up-load the install. The final plan is LSX 427 Doug Nash 5 speed and an up graded 9 inch. Automatics and air condition are for sissies

If this is something you want to do go ahead. I did after a year of planning six month to get it running "it lives." So I go back 18 months looking at all the sites. Put into your search engine see what comes up 1. you need a lift 1 or 2 inches 2. the AX15 may or may hot handle the power that is way I am using a 700R4. 3 the dana 35 will break so I got a 66 bronco backing plate to backing plate 30 inches dana 35 32 inches (I measured them.) I have the 9 inch out back in the stock position the front 4 link are all adjustable with a 2 inch lift kit. All this was installed before putting in the engine. If you think this will be an easy install think again lead foot. There is the radiator Novak has a nice $450 made to fit, I use a stock 3 core from Rock Auto plus 2 nine inch cooling fans. Stock Comanche hoses work they fit the chevy water hecks. Went to the Eleele Ace Hardware for sink hardware cut and fit (2 trips.) Running header Headman block huggers had to modify the collector to aim where pipe need to go. If you do not like getting up and down crawling out then back under the Comanche. Save your money go down to the dealership you like, pay for 5 years while I put in a bigger motor (more power n speed more cubic inches.) Motor fit like a glove I am using a HEI big head 4 pin distributor about 5 inches from the firewall only got to remove cap to take out distributor body. I used the Advance Adaptor motor mounts cost. They have the engine closer to the radiator hence the fans. Using OEM in tank fuel pump and Holley fuel regulator with feed back. It drops the pressure so the AFB works fine. I will be putting in a TBI from a Mercurser that I found in a van. It is complete with 6 pin distributor what a fine. The mercruser is a 383 needed to pull the heads darn engine it has a roller cam and rockers. Free still is the best I have 2 Comanche's a daily and the project. Both are 86 by chance the wire for the 86 can be taken out (mark all ends) get a wiring book they are on ebay. Study the book take out the engine compartment harness. Follow the book there is 1 red constant 12vdc 1 yellow power on 1 green ignition and a lot more. I looked at that engine harness on my garage floor for a month before cutting and rewire. Did I write draw everything out that helps, all the wire going to the ECU can go be careful go slow. I made some mistakes do not cut so fast. The 86 to 90 has that 4 relay under a shield I reuse them. 1. fuel relay there is a orange black wire from the stock relay keep that circuit that is how my fuel system works. 1. to turn on 12vdc to distributor 1. to turn on the fans. Keep the starter solenoid on the passenger side that is the 12vdc needed for the Comanche and that SOL pin goes to the starter (that a green wire so chevy). DO NOT CUT DOUBLE CHECK There is a lot so if you fail to plan you plan to fail, remember 18 months with 6 months of actual get it started. Once started I was driving that day oh yea set the height you want the Comanche to be. You will need a drive shaft. $278 deliver to Kekaha Hawaii 3 inch aluminum with the 1350 for the ford and 1310 for the 700R4. I run all day no over heating no oil pressure problems no trans problems. It is still a work in progress maybe by the time another person pays off their 5 year truck loan I also will be finish I hope
