Useing an external slave cylinder? How?
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It looks to me like you have everything you need except the flex line from the master cylinder to the slave. What do you mean "a whole new clutch setup"? Dude, what you have there is an external slave setup. That's an improvment over the internal -- don't tell me you WANT to go back to the internal! No what I'm meaning is do I have to change everything else out with the clutch ie: master cylinder/lines/anything with the petal/etc. Trust me if it's just I gotta conect the lines from what I have now to the external style then yeah I'm all for keeping the external, I just figured it would end up being a huge headache to keep it. It's not that I'm afraid of doing the work it's more along the lines of I don't want to have my truck down for alonger time than I have too. -Cody -
Useing an external slave cylinder? How?
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Speedo Cable and Slave Cylinder that came with the tranny Everything that came with the tranny One of the other side.... So I'm guessin that I have to get a whole new clutch set up to use this tranny? If so is there away to use an internal setup on this transmission? It says it came out of a '94 if that helps/changes anything. -Cody -
Ok, I picked up my AX-15 finally but I have a few questions, the biggiest one being how to you make the external slave cylinder work on the internal style truck? I know it can be done, and I gotta feelin it's not to bad but I'm just tryin to figure it out. 2nd question, this tranny has an electric/digital speedo setup.....I have a good old cable speedo cable. Is there a way to make it work or am I in trouble with it? Thanks yall, -Cody

Another strange driveline question
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
So....umm....does anyone know if that's right? I just wanna know if the driveshaft (tailshaft end) will work in both trannys. If I can figure that out, I'll get the length stuff figured out when the tranny gets here and ready to go in. -Cody -
Put a radiator in the Comanche last night, and then took a few shots of my MJ and my moms XJ out in the front yard. Mine's an '88 4.0 5spd 2wd. Mom's is a '96 4.0 H.O. auto 4wd. Figured I'd share a few pics of the other Jeep at the house with yall. -Cody

Another strange driveline question
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
So are you saying that a stock drive shaft that's behind a 2wd BA-10/5 will slide out of that tailshaft and slide right into a 2wd AX-15 tailshaft? I was told that lenghts were the same but the ends were different.....I'm gettin more and more confused, it would be so much easier if the tranny was sittin in the garage right now, lol. -

Another strange driveline question
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Okay, understand now. AFAIK both yokes use the 1310 u-joints, so as long as the overall driveshaft length is the correct w. the 23-spline yoke it should work fine. Umm.......what does "AFAIK" mean??? :???: -Cody -
Another strange driveline question
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm swapping the BA/10 to a AX-15 and don't wanna deal with having to get a custom drive shaft so I figured just change the slip yoke from the BA/10 21 spline to the AX-15 23 spline. -Cody -
By the time I get done I'm gonna know everything about doing these swaps, lol. Anyways, I know that when you swap a AX-15 in place of the BA-Crap you have to either A:have a drive shaft made or B: get one from the same wheelbase MJ that had the AX-15 already in it. My question is will my choice C work? Choice C being: swap the drive shaft end from the BA end to the AX-15 end (and by end I'm meaning from the u-joint forward to the tailshaft). Sorry can't remember proper terms for it. Basicly I'd keep my tube and everything back to the rear end but just swaping the actual part that mates to the tailshaft and rejoining it with a new u-joint. My question.....will it work? :???: Ant the other thing, no I'm not going to 4wd on the truck, I'm stickin with the 2wd for now. I just don't want to worry about the truck all the time thinkin the tranny is gonna just fall out of it. -Cody

Interchanging radiators???
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yeah I've got a new one on the way from Advance Auto Parts right now for like $105 so it's not to bad. I coulda got it for alittle cheaper going through my work, but I didn't want to drive 30mins to save like 10-15 dollars. So yeah I'll get this fixed and then get back to figuring out the whole tranny issue. :fs1: Like yall tolb me when I first signed up and said I had a Comanche, after fixing one problem......be ready for the next. :headpop: Oh well. -Cody -
I'm tryin to find out what radiators are interchangable. I've got my '88 MJ and mine just sprang aleak. My question is that I know where a '87 V-6 4wd 5spd is sittin and I'm pretty sure it still has a radiator sittin in it. Anyways, what years/models(MJ/XJ/etc)/engines will have a radiator that interchanges. I know that there's ways to make it a more updated closed system, and I'm gonna look into it, but I'm really just curious about what radiators will work in my busted one's place lol. -Cody

Transmission/Transfercase Questions
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Ok, I know you said that with the driveshaft if I swap the AX-15 into it then I need one from the same drive train/bed setup? IE: My 2wd '88 MJ Long Bed that has a BA-10 I would need a driveshaft thats out of a '89.5 or newer MJ 2wd when I do the AX-15 swap? or can it just be from any 2wd Long Bed MJ? (like the one that's under the truck now) I found a few AX-15's near buy runnin anywhere from $200-$400 within like 40miles of me, and I'm not worried about going 4wd untill later, right now I just gotta get back and forth to work till I get a 2nd car/truck to drive. -Cody -
Transmission/Transfercase Questions
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
umm cody that sounds like that hurt a lot :rotf: and the part about you "saving your pennies" :shake: you own a jeep man. every person here on CC can tell you that that aint gona happen :rotf: :fool: It's not that bad, I had a T-56 fall into my lap.....well not really fall, it was more along the lines of tossed to me from my bosses shoulder to me when we pulled it from a WS6 Trans Am that was on the lift.....needless to say I wasn't ready for it and the floor and my butt broke my fall :fs1: . -Cody -
Transmission/Transfercase Questions
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Ok I got another question (big surprise right lol), is the input shaft bearing on the AX 4/5 the same as the one on the BA 10/15? I know it's a dumb question, but when looking for the bearing I find them for the AX 4/5 and the AX 15 but not the BA 10/15. One the other hand I find three different input seals. I'm trying to figure it out b/c I really don't want to buy a full bearing/seal rebuild kit for it when I don't really need too. I know it's not the smartest route but I think I may just fix the problems in the BA 10/15 and save money to get the stuff for a AX 15 swap and do the tranny/transfer case/4x4 swap all at one time. -Cody -
Transmission/Transfercase Questions
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Ok, thats good info to hear, but are there any issues with the crossmember, and if so what is it? Somewhere I read that you have to move it and drill/tap new treads in the frame??? Is that for going from an auto or something? I know I keep asking questions, but like you said, it's better to know than to spend the money and still not be able to put it in. -Cody -
Transmission/Transfercase Questions
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well crap, crap and more crap. I guess it's time to start saving my pennies, hope the tranny can hold out and an AX-15 falls into my lap......What's the best doner to pull the AX-15 from. I was doing some reading about the swap and how some are internal slave cylenders and some are external, and then some things to do with the crossmember being an issue. I'm just trying to know what I'm looking for as far as a doner Jeep goes. -Cody -
Ok, went to Pull-a-Part today and found a '86 Comanche down there that's 4wd 5spd LB with the V-6 (I'm guessing a 2.8L). My question is will the transmission/transfercase/rear drive shaft swap over to my '88 4.0 I-6 5spd LB? The reason I'm wondering is b/c; A: the whole drivetrain is there B: I wanna do a 4wd swap in the future anyways and C: the tranny started wineing on the way back and it sounds like a imput bearing or throw out bearing. Oh yeah and the other thing, do I need the 4x4 rear drive shaft? I wasn't sure if there's any length difference in the two of them. Thanks yall, Cody

So yeah, I changed all fluids but the tranny and the noise is gone from what I can tell and so far I haven't seen any water residue in the oil, so as of right now I'm sayin yay! lol. Even better, tomorrow I'm going down to pull-a-part with my girlfriend b/c there's a Comanche and a hand full of Cherokees down there that we're gonna go get some stuff from. -Cody -

Yeah theres alittle build up, and talking about the temp guage. The funny part of all of these issues has been the fact that all of this started about the time I replaced the thermostat, but I don't think and hope it's not the head gasket. -Cody -

I'm hopeing that it does the same for me. On a little bit of a different note, just went out and messed with the truck alittle(it's lunch time now lol) I found out something that worries me (I think it was caused by me not paying attention when I replaced the valve cover gasket), I found creamy white on the oil dipstick. If I remember right thats water, but it's not loosing any from the cooling system so I think it may have got in there when I changed the gasket. Anyways truck is getting all fluids changed, today and hopefully will be good as new again. -Cody -

I checked the rearend fluid and toped it off (alittle bit low), I tried to check the tranny fluid level but couldn't figure out where the level screw/plug was at. I couldn't figure it out from the book I have. I checked the rear bearings, they seem fine(they spun free and easy) The intake tube is fine, gotta little bit of oil from blow by in it, but no cuts/rips/holes in it. I'm thinking that if it's something halfway major in the rear end I'm just gonna go try to get a Dana 35, 40 or a Ford 8.8 and just swap it out. I figure with what it would cost to go threw my crappy rear end I'd be better off just to get a little bit better of a unit. Oh yeah and last night I drove it and it sounded like the wineing was comming from the tranny, but I'm not sure. I'm gonna mess with her and see if anything changes or if I can pin point the noise. Thanks guys, Cody :USAflag: -

Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Yeah I've honestly have a list wrote out of things I need/want to do. I'm going to the parts yard in a day or two and try to find some stuff. The only thing that I'm worried about is the fact that today on the way home from work the truck started to make a light wine/whisle noise when I'm 1/2 throttle or more, and it sounds like it's comming from the tranny or the rear end. Anyone have an idea of what might be causing that? -Cody -
I'm not 100% but if I remember right they have c-clips like the other small Ford rearends. Correct me if I'm wrong, I do have a question to add. Is there any moding to the rear end when you swap it in? And would disk brakes or drum brakes make any difference? -Cody
