$300 '88 Pioneer Project "Commi"
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
I've kinda been thinkin about it, as long as it doesn't cause an issue with the driveshaft, but I'm pretty sure that it's the same small dana that I've got. I'd like to get that axle and the bed, mine are rusted out over the fender flares on both sides, but I may just try and fix them. Need my warm dry weather back :fs1: , dang you cold and wet!! :fs1: BTW: Driveshaft has been redone and put into the truck, so far no issues, but it'll get a good test on the drive to work today. It was out of balance something bad from what the guy told me. While I had it out I replaced the end seal on the tailshaft. I think I need another bottle of fluid but I think I cleaned out all the Autozones (2) in Mooresville and they're the only ones who carry it around here. -Cody -
$300 '88 Pioneer Project "Commi"

Pull-a-part down in Charlotte, they've got a whole red '88 long bed 2.8/5spd/4x4 sittin down there, I'm thinkin about gettin the bed if it's not to hard to get off or to expensive. Wouldn't mind the front axle either. -
Different Headlights?
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
 , crap I don't have the money for anything like that......guess this means H4 conversions with the H-4 bulbs and upgrading the harness on my truck and call it a day.....well that and some nice fog lights...I miss my foglights my Ranger had. On the other hand it should be kinda fun to see what that company says about their lights and how "great" they are. -Cody -
Well I've been on here for a little while, but just now gettin around to writing up my little build on my MJ. Specs (when I picked it up): '88 Pioneer/4.0/2wd/BA-10/Dana 35/Long Bed/190,xxx ish miles Got it for $300 b/c it had a list of issues with it, some he knew about and others that I found out... Radio not working right Rust on the fenders tranny grinding interior lights not working crank vent tube leaking alot of oil slave cylinder going bad/leaking rear main leak bad tie rod end needed tires bumper rusted/beaten to crap floors had some light rust radiator was shot thermostat shot exhaust broken at the mufler all mirrors messed up The first meeting with the truck after about a 2hr drive... Back at home, didn't keep the cover, didn't really like it and didn't have the extra cash on me to get it. Anyways did some basic repair work on it, a set of wheels/tires, new rear bumper, radiator/thermostat/flush coolant, and tie rod and now she looks like this.... old bumper.. new bumper  it's shiney lol.... Ended up pickin up the bumper, the tow hooks, a bed mat, and my mirrors and paid like $30 for all of it together. Anyways a few weeks after the tranny finally said no more, went and picked me up an AX-15 from a '94 XJ for $200, swapped it into the truck, but now I gotta have the driveshaft redone and balanced......and that leads me up to right now, waiting to get my slip yoke so I can drop everything off at the driveshaft shop. I've done a little work inside the truck, pulled the carpet up to find some rust, but not to bad. I'm redoing some of the work on it now, but being cold and wet outside the bed liner stuff doesn't really like to stick to anything, so I just sanded/primed the floor and waiting till the sun comes out and the temps go back up yo do the bed liner stuff. -Cody

Different Headlights?
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
http://www.driftnamiperformance.com/Headlight_Conversion_p/sdt-lhp7x6.htm These are the ones that I found, like I said I'm tryin to research them to see if they are worth anything or not. They say that they are SAE/DOT approved, but the company is also in Canada, so I'm not sure if they'll be ok here. I'm sending them an email asking if the cone covers the whole bulb or not. They look the same about the as the ones you have a pic of, but I'm hopeing that these are a better "non horrible glare/blinding" version ;) . -Cody -
Different Headlights?
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I know, I'm not gonna put them in just to go blind people, I'm not a moron yall. I've found a set of replacement lenses that say they are a projector style setup. The full projector lens setup inside the conversion lens, so it should direct the light where it needs to go instead of just a lot of bright blinding light going everywhere. When I get it figured out I'll let yall know about it. -Cody -
Different Headlights?
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks for all the options guys, when I've got the money to do it I'm gonna redo the harness first thing, may do it in moms XJ while I'm at it. After that I think the H4-conversions would come after, and I've got an H.I.D. kit that I was runnin in my Ranger setting on my desk so I think they'll get put in the mix too. After that I'll be lookin for a set of fogs that I can either turn them into or already are an H.I.D. setup. Yeah, I like to blind people just alittle bit......not really I just like to be able to see, and for people to see me. -Cody -
What kinda options are there out there for the MJ as far as headlight upgrades? A freind of mine upgraded from sealed glass beams in his Ranger to the lenses that you can swap the bulbs out instead of the whole glass beam. They used to sell them in Autozone or Advance but don't carry them anymore. Anybody know what they call those light kits or where to get them? -Cody

AX-15 Pilot Bearing issue
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well it's runnin and moving under it's own power. I was right on the slave cylinder, it took two of them (the first one broke) before I got it fixed and working. Now she runs and moves but leaks about like the exxon valdes. The clutch fluid hose is leakin and the tailshaft has alittle leak :fs1: dang leaks!!!! But hey.....it's driveable.....yay!! lol -Cody -
AX-15 Pilot Bearing issue
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well, everything is in and "working". By "working" I mean the truck runs, tranny works/shifts, everything is fine......but.....I think the slave cylender is shot. I thought to replace it before putting everything together but said nah it'll be ok. I bled it for like 20mins, had pedal but then it faded out, so I pumped the pedal and got it back, and so on and so forth. -

We'll see, I'm gettin back on it today and hopefully finishing it, the other thing is I don't have to worry about the linkages, I'm still a 2wd. -Cody -

AX-15 Pilot Bearing issue
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yeah, got it......now dealin with the crossmember problems. Worked on it all day and I'm drained :ack: so I'll get back on it in the morning. I do have a question for you guys that did the swap. Did yall have to cut any of the floor for the shifter to clear? When I got the tranny up into place and bolted to the engine the spot where the shift tower bolts in is right at the edge of where the factory hole in the floor is. I think it might clear but just wanted to ask. -Cody -
AX-15 Pilot Bearing issue
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well I got it figured out, like the idiot that I am when I got the input bearing out I didn't check behind myself and get the old bushing out after the bearing came out, that's why it wouldn't fit. So got that out and the new in and gotta go grab a few things and then put the clutch in it and then the tranny and hopefully have it done tonight or tomorrow mid day. -
AX-15 Pilot Bearing issue
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
According to the yard I got it at it's a '94. It's an external slave cylender/electric speedo setup if that changed anything. See what gets me is the input shaft on the AX-15 is HUGE compared to the BA-10/5. It almost seems that the input shaft on the AX-15 is the same size as the O.D. of the bearing that I pulled out of it. And the bushing that you speak of from the CJ I've got, it's way to huge to even think about putting into the crank where the old bearing was at. -Cody -
Ok, so I'm knee deep in the AX-15 swap on my '88 MJ, right at half way to be exact. Anyways I pulled the old pilot bearing out and went to put in the new pilot bearing and come to find out they gave me a pilot bushing instead. Well went back up there to get the right one and ran into some issues. Noone had one instock for a '73 CJ5, and on top of that something just doesn't seem right. The size that the bearing has to be something crazy. (1" outside diameter with ~0.8125" inside diameter) I'm runnin up to a bearing company about 15-20mins from my house to hope they have it in stock. So is there something that I'm missin here? I'm loosing my mind with it and I've been like a month without being able to drive the truck and want her back by the weekend. Any help would be great. -Cody P.S. - Yes there will be a full write up on this thing....hopefully....it's really not that bad of a swap to do an AX-15 2wd hehehe ;)

There's an orange one for sale like 15-20mins from my house....she's purty. -Cody

Another strange driveline question
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Cool deal, I'll get one ordered. I got my clutch in today, so now all I need is the Shifter/shift tower and the yoke and it'll be time to try again. :clapping: Thanks for all the help  -Cody -

Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
And that's all there is to it?? No worries about any other size issues? -
Another strange driveline question
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
So it is spline count. More splines = larger diameter shaft. Can you count the # of splines on the AX15 tailshaft? Then we can find you the correct slip yoke. It has 27 splines on it. -
Another strange driveline question
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
WHY won't it work? Spline count, length, what? The biggest issue was the size, the tail shaft comming out of the AX15 is a bigger diameter than the BA. The driveshaft yoke wouldn't slip over the tailshaft of the AX15 at all. So Spline count/length doesn't really matter b/c it won't slip over. Just another little bit of info to add to the list of things that don't work. :typing: -Cody -
Another strange driveline question
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yeah the slip yoke in the factory BA-10/5 will not work in the AX-15 so now I'm on the look out for one from an AX-15. Trust me when this thing is all said and done and the tranny is in the truck I'll have a whole write up. I was joking with a friend of mine about the fact that when I get it done I'm gonna start making a swap kit with all the little stuff you've gotta have for the swap, lol. -Cody -
Another strange driveline question
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
FYI (For yalls information) it won't work that easy, I tried to swap the driveshaft over from the BA to the AX15....no go. So just another little tid-bit of info that I found out. So it's back to lookin for parts for me again. -Cody -
Useing an external slave cylinder? How?
Codycobra84 replied to Codycobra84's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Cool deal, thats what I was thinkin about doin, just wasn't sure. Thanks man. -Cody
