Need opinions on what to do BAD!!
codybutz replied to MJ300's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
ive always used a 2" putty knife and a heat gun. i wouldnt heat up the trim itself but i use it to heat up the blade alittle on the putty knife, not like glowing red hot but a little warm. also if you don't mind messing up the paint on the donor jeep you can just grab a piece of wire with to doll rods on the end, you just slide the wire behind the trim and work your way down the jeep until its all off -
So i'm goign to check out a couple of dana 44s this weekend, and all the owners say they have come out of mjs. Problem is that they do not know what year or what gears they have in them. is there like a chart or somthing that could help me figure this out so i know what i'm getting/ looking at. also whats a fair price to offer for a rear 44 out of an mj? and since nobody has ever seen my mj i'll try to get picks up of it this weekend to prove that it is real thanx again - cody

I have a lifted xj and i'm pretty good with a welder and torch but these would be my first axles swaps you think that these would be good to use for my Mj, right now i have the d30 vac disco. front and d35 rear. i'm guessing these would be great improvement
-
At first i wasnt sure if i would want full width or not. thats not to big of a deal i guess...but the part of my build that i can not bring myself to do is to take the time to weld new spring perches on my d35, i mean at that point i might as well up grade the rear, right?

Hey guys I have some real quick questions. 1. what would be a good price for a set of rubicon rims? I don't wanna rip anybody off, but at the same time i wouldnt mind getting a nice set for minimal cash. 2. does anybody know of or have a NV3550 5-speed in decent shape for sale midwest area? i think they were used from 00-07' correct me if i'm wrong. 3. also would the 5.2 v8 fit in a 87 comanche? thanx guys

If your just filling trim holes remove the paint around each hole to the size of a quarter. then take the rounded side of a ball hammer or a body hammer will work too and give it a little hit right over each hole so that each trim hole will now have a quarter size dent. you don't want a huge dent just about an 1/8" deep. make sure each dent has a nice tooth to it so that you can slap some all-metal or body filler in it. then get a nice straight sanding block and take all the filler down till its smooth with the rest of the panels. this is how i was taught to shave and remove all the trim on cars. make sure you clean the surface before you use any filler or it will not grip the panel and you'll have a weak bond. you can also just weld each hole up but if you don't hav a welder or you don't know what your doing you can easily warp the panels. let me know if you hav any other autobody questions, I'm an ASE cert. body guy

In Jersey you have to buy the report? Dang! And I thought Chicago was corrupt! Your truck still looks good. Not to high jack this thread but is that the stock bumper on the rear? Thats what my 87 came with.

bad ass mj build, check this thread out

its very nice, :hmm: but can you post the link to all the stock mj parts they are selling off? i'm building a MJ not a toyota, i could use some parts... -
my friends family has a rabbit its huge and walks on a leash, but they are the only family i know in chicago proper with chickens, a rooster, snapping turtles, and emus, as family pets and not food. me i just have a dog.

So i really like the stock bench seat in my mj and have considered the bucket swap, but never really found or sat in any buckets that i liked enough to swap in. And today i rode in my sisters jeep liberty. she has an 03 libby with black stock buckets. and surprisingly i liked them more then i probably should have. has anybody done this swap? the libby buckets to the mj that is. i know id need to make completely new mounting brackets. but since they are not power seats that shouldnt be to hard. i know people swap the xj buckets but these are alot nicer i think then buckets i hav in my 01 xj. what do you guys think? any thoughts/ suggestions? i'm not sure if this is the right section for this, as i was just thinking out loud and thought the "pub" would be the right place to babble. - Cody

does anybody know where i can buy a replacement headliner and carpet for the cab of my 87 5speed mj? or is there some kind of fabric that i oculd use that would hold up just as nice? other then a roller and spray adhesive, what else would i need to install them? thanx in advance - cody

thanx guys, even tho i kinda hi jacked this thread youv'e answered alot of questions. i'm gunna start looking at that list of seals and then hopefully after she ( ya my mj is a girl) stops leaking, i'll be allowed to park her back in the driveway haha.
-
i could do the gaskets and smaller stuff but if i were gunna completely rebuild and stroke it i have somebody for that, that kinda owes me a favor. so if not a complete rebuild what would you do for starters?
-
i just figured since the truck is getting ripped apart and same with the engine to fix most the problems with that at once would it be worth the time to rebuild and or stroke it while i had it all apart?
-
no it runs just leaks from all over and i plan on driving it across country this summer. i just didnt know the cons or the stroker or how its road manners where
-
not to high jack this thread but i am kinda in the same boat. i hav a 87 mj with the 4.0 that has 130k on it. i was thinking about a rebuild and if i should stroke it or not. its mostly a trail/camping/roadtrip truck. do you think the stroker kit would be a bad idea for this type of use?
-
do you think this stuff could be used on the floors instead of the dnya mat for under the carpet? and on the rear cab wall under the window? i'm in the middle of doing my floor pans, i would really like to reinsulate and carpet. i know i could just bedline the floors, but i'd rather not, just my personal pref.
-
i just need the cover and i'm not really looking to pay somebody to recover it when i can do it if i can find just the black stock cover.
-
Hey guys, it seems most of you don't really like the stock bench that comes in the mjs. I actually don't mind them, so i'm trying to find somewhere that i can get a replacement bench cover. i've read where alot of the time the foam blows out and the seat needs to be replaced but i hav the oppisite problem, my foam is good my cover is bad. any hints on where could find one? thanx.

yep i hav the NP231 t-case. i couldnt find a tag on the trans anywhere. is there anywhere else on the truck that would say? could i look it up according to the vin? since i plan on going with a 4.5" lift, has anybody used a certain brand they liked? I have a RE 4.5 on my xj and i like it just was kinda pricey. also i have read that i won't need a sye kit for the 4.5" on the mj, like i did on my xj, could somebody elaborate as to why this might be? i'll try and get some pictures up tom since i'm sure everybody would much rather answer questions when theres a picture attached of the truck. thanx again guys
-
haha. i'm on the northside of the chicago. ya i found all the threads on xj floor pans but i was wondering if anybody has found a pace to get mj pans from that way it would be less of a pain in my @$$. i'm gunna crawl back under it once i warm up and see what trans is actaully in it, what should i be looking for when i'm under there? i.e. trans id tag and t- case id tags? thanx again guys
-
ok i just got the title and found out its actually a 1987 with the 4.0 and 5 speed, does this make more sense now? i've readon this site there were two versions of the 5 speed trans one being better than the other could somebody go into a little detail as to why and not just an answer like...." its not worth the price of trans fluid you put in it" thanx again guys as far as the floor problem goes, no pictures right now but the drivers side will need to be completely replaced. as far as replacing it it should not be a problem i got my ase cert in autobody when i was away at school. and as far as the welding goes, i'm a welder by trade with most my own equipment in the garage. i just need to know where i can find a replacement floorpan for less then 100 bones. thanx guys
-
hmmmm and the plot thickens.... ya i already found that link its pretty helpful i was just wondering if there was a more detailed answer, but thanx. so now i'm gunna run outside and figure out which motor i really have.....thanx for the help so far.
