  1. YEP, the snow was big time, I buried the yardstick in my back yard with 8" of snow on top of that. and now we have another storm coming in tomorrow and they are calling for 10 to 12" more. Jim ,no need to stop, all the info I can get is welcomed and thank you for the leads you have found so far, they are a great help. Bear
  2. I just done a little research and the 170 was built on a widened willys panel wagon chassis. it came with either a T-90A or a T-98, the 98 is a 4 speed, if this puppy has that, there will be no changes. it has 103.5 " wheelbase, 77" wide, the dana 53 is a semi floater axle, the hurricane is a 266ci putting out 190 ft lbs of torq @ 1400 rpms and 105 hp at 3600 rpms, it has the 2 speed spicer T-18 t-case with a low range of 2.48 to 1, sporting a stock clearance of 8.5" at the axles. payload was 3510 lbs in a 45 cubic ft box. the FC-150 had the tipping problems, not on the 170, so after a little research it turns out to be quite a nice puppy, if it has the 4 speed that will be even sweeter.
  3. I have no photos yet because I bought it sight unseen and will be looking at it Monday as we have a major snow storm coming in tomorrow . I have no plans of making it a trail rig. I want to set it up to put my mj on the back of it to take IT to the trails. If I can find a different way to do a little better on the hywy speed, without changing the gears, I will keep the Hurricane, maybe there is an overdrive somewhere I can mate up to it, or a 4 speed tranny. Yes, these things were known to tip when you apply the brakes, they fixed that with a wider stance and added weight to the rear. these rigs were built to be work horses. I have seen some as wreckers, fire trucks, and one for sale for 40k that was a backhoe with a single cab and the bucket up front as the passenger. I talked with the guy today, he's a good friend and found that the cab on the interior was fine, so maybe his definition of a bad cab isn't one that we all share with our MJs . I will be painting both trucks the same color and scheme, to make a traveling set. also, in talking with him, I could basically change the fluids, rubber, battery, and plugs and run it, as it was running when it was parked. this one is white like the one that is in this thread. I am excited and I haven't event seen it yet. I have been wanting one for over 25 years.
  4. I found a 1962 FC170 sitting on a farm for 200 dollars. I will be picking it up in the next few weeks or so to begin work on it. the frame and bed are in great shape and the cab needs a lot of work. it has a dana 44 front and a dana 53 rear with 4:88 gearing running the old hurricane 6 cylinder. I am going to swap in a 4.0 ho,tranny and T-case out of my 95' xj to make it a bit more road worthy and later this year I will be making the bed a tilt flat bed so it can be use to tote my MJ to the trails. I have designs on making this my DD. I'll post up some pics once I get some together.
  5. I will post up a link to more photos from the Turkey convoy after tomorrow, as we are delivering them at 8:30 tomorrow morning.
  6. there are a bunch of photos on the front page of our site and in a thread named Fall Turkey crawl. the link for it is above the first photo on the front page http://www.bigrubbers4x4.org
  7. the Big Rubbers Custom 4x4 Club held a Fall Turkey Crawl at their property and raised over 1300 dollars to purchase 92 Thanksgiving Turkeys for a local Food Bank that services 92 Families each month. they are being delivered this coming Tuesday, with the local Police leading the way, as our escort
  8. the raffle has been growing, there is now a 92' blue steel winch rope, winch covers, a Tom Woods 200 dollar gift cert. and some royal purple synmax tranny fluid. the club has also arranged for a 15% discount at the local Comfort Inn and Sleep Inn for those who are traveling.
  9. hi Guys, SW. PA. here, near Johnstown,Pa. home of the floods. if you guys ever want to get together and do something, my Club has 180 acres of our own that we share with others. we have camping available along the creek, right at the staging area for the trails, huge central fire pit and there is even a grill there, you bring the propane, the use is free. in 3 years, once we have the trail system completed, it will open as an OHV park. we just recently started work on the place and have held 2 events so far, a Pig roast, a huge turn out for that, and this past weekend we raised nearly 700 dollars for our charities during our Fall Turkey Crawl. our next ride is a Toys for Tots run on Nov. 21st. check us out at http://www.bigrubbers4x4.org
  10. I still have the MJ, doing a long arm front and 4 link rear over the winter on it, the street Jeep is a Cherokee, 4" lift running 32's, I have 95' grand in the back yard with a new 4" lift on it I bought for parts, paid 250 for it. and I have 95' xj for spare some parts. I was out last weekend at our clubs property and ripped off a lower control arm bracket from the axle going over some rocks. working on that this week, I don't have a welder, so I have a friend coming tomorrow to weld it all up. you need to come out and check out our trails. I know it is further than RC, but they are new trails to everyone, we have 180 acres, doesn't sound like a lot, but it's packed with some good nasty trails, plus we have been cutting in new ones so stockers can come out and play.
  11. 1st Annual Toys for Tots trail ride at Doe Valley, hosted by the Big Rubbers 4x4 club. there will also be a Smittybuilt XRC8 8000lb winch to be Raffled off. The winch was sent to us by 4WD Hardware and the monies raised will benefit the West Taylor VFD generator fund. the playland is located 30 minutes off the Bedford exit of the Pa. T-pike. for more info visit http://www.bigrubbers4x4.org there is a flyer posted up with all the info and a pre-register list as there is a 75 rig limit.
  12. Hi Lynn, I was there this year, didn't take my MJ, took the Cherokee. I met up with Bruce there. Andy, I used to live in Coatesville, you maight have seen my Waggie, only one that was around, lifted w/winch, you may have seen my MJ too, as I use to work for PECO right there in C-ville, at that time it was silver over blue, on 35's , snorkel, winch, ect. Pa.Jeeps puts on one of the largest Jeep show-n-shine on the east coast. I wrote an article for 3 different mags over the years, as it has grown.
  13. Big rubbers 4x4 club is hosting a Charity trail ride at Doe Valley, near Johnstown,pa. here's the link for more info www.bigrubbers4x4.org the ride is to raise funds to purchase Turkeys and pass them out to needy families in time for the Holidays. we will also be holding a raffle to raise money to purchase a 5000 kw generator for a local VFD, for one of their trucks. a limit of 75 rigs for this ride. the trails are " new to 4 wheeling" as the club has secured 180 acres for trail riding and holding Charity trail rides, eventually, this will open as a 4x4 OHV park thanks Bear
  14. I have McGuard lug nuts, I have had the same set on 3 xjs and now my MJ, they are high quality and are used on race cars. the bevel is perfect for my MT street locks wheels and in the past I had AR black steelies and they worked fine on them. I forget how much I paid for them as I have had this set for about 10 yrs.
  15. I don't have the gizmo on my diff. cover. I had swapped in a different set of axles. I got the axles from an XJ that already had the gearing and locker in the rear and a posi-lok in the front one, a guy just built them and decided to use a 60 and a 44, so I paid 350 for the pair.
  16. thanks again, I run 35s' and will have a small load in the back with my rack, 2 hi-lifts, co2 tank, spare, and the boonie box. the punkins have 4:56 cogs and locked in the rear. thanks, I'm looking forward to better braking, next upgrade will be the fuel injectors.
  17. thank you, that is indeed good to know. question: if I am upgrading, do I need to swap out the prop. valve to a xj? or will the mj one be fine with the master/booster of a 95'?
  18. I too, had the quadratrac, it has a 272:1 low range, with the dinky lever under the seat, as Eagle said. What I did like about it was it was a lockable transfer case, by turning that vacuum switch in the glovebox. with selectable lockers, it would be fully locked, side to side, and front to rear.
  19. thanks for the secret. I have it installed, no problems with the rod length, I do have another question, my old proportioning valve had 4 ports on it, the one from the 95' has 3, but where the 4th one goes on the valve on the 95' there is a plug. Is it safe to say that I can take out that plug and use the newer valve? they are identical in every way except the plug that makes the newer one 3 ports instead of 4. I swapped it out master cylinder and booster as one unit and if the plug can be removed and I use it for the 4th line, then I have no need to mess with the brake lines, they all line up real close, I do have to fashion a new wiper bottle, because I need the airbox to use with the snorkel, so far it has been an easy upgrade. Jeff, which weekend, I have a family reunion on the 8th, I will be close by all month as our club is getting ready for a trail cutting/pig roast/ wheel what we cut weekend August 29th, on our clubs personal property. so we are busy marking out trails to be cut. check out what we have going on in the pig roast info thread on our website, maybe you can make it up then www.bigrubbers4x4.org Bear
  20. I am taking out the brake booster on a 95' XJ to use in my 87' MJ, I have everything disconnected except where the booster rod meets the brake pedal, How do you get the pin and clip thingy off? thanks in advance for your help. Bear
  21. thanks, I have the 4.0 . it's pretty low, I was just curious as to what the ratio was. I don't use 1st gear on the street, as it is too low, and offroading I use 4 low and 1st gear, and just idle over most of the obstacles. thanks again, Bear
  22. what was the stock tranny for the 87' MJ, I have the 5 speed. I'm looking for the gear ratios of it, and the gear ratio of the 231 transfer case,( I think it is 272 to 1 low range?) . with 4:56 gearing on 35' tires, I'm trying to figure out my crawl ratio is.
  23. well I fabbed up the template for the new rear fender flare, Once I get someone to take some pics for me I'll post up my rendition of fender flares. I had some major body cancer to cut out, treat, and repair. I also trimmed off part of the fender, behind the rear tire, and am gonna make a bumper that comes around the side and replace that area, so to speak, with the bumper. got to change a fuel pump in my XJ tomorrow and then get back on the truck.
  24. fash, I can sympathize with you being in Maine, your further north than I am. I'm here in the mts. of western Pa. as far as living the life, lol, I'm just like everybody else, just older than most. I have my 2 sons living with me, 21 and 16, moved them here to the mts. near where I grew up, from the city life near Philly, 4 years ago. what I like, I can literally go out my back yard and go wheeling.
  25. damn Jeff, don't fret about the tailgate handle, how's the family doing? I did look for you at the Open House. it was a good turnout, 12 new club members, and 3 new Kids for our BSA Venture Crew. just send me a pm and we'll get together whenever you come back up this way, and give my best to mom and your Aunt.
