Just found another MJ for sale $500, 4wd but with a V6 and he has no idea even what a differential is much less if it is a DANA44 with a 4.1 - Why does he even own it? And he doesn't have a computer so I could send him pictures. Got to find a way to avoid a road trip. Of course I just did a road trip over the weekend to Las Vegas for a DANA44 Same year as mine and I'd love to swap both differential if its a DANA44 with 4.1 and then sell everything else

good data - but first I have to find a replacement rear DANA 44. I just finally confirmed I have 3.55 gears. Needed to be sure even though that was the general thought. Don't know if I'm going to find a DANA44 with 3.55 more then likely 4.10 gears. That is ok cause I want at least 4.10 but even 5.6 or 5.8. In the mean time I have an interim problem I need to resolve. The rear shock bolts are getting beat to death. I need either to put armor around them or move them. Image Not Found Image Not Found I was thinking on putting a mount on the backside of the axle and run across it to the upper mount. I'd have to make it cleared but the distance would be the same as before I lifted it

I've discovered there are so many ways to lift an MJ that the options are wild. Here is my current plan What I have now: 2" spacer on the front coil with longer shock. add-a-leaf on the rear with longer shock - leafs on bottom gave me a little lift and didn't cost much - but not enough lift as I've discovered doing rock/trail riding here in AZ my plan: replace rear DANA35 with a Cherokee DANA44 and keep the leafs on top - shock should be ok replace crossmember with a HD and a 1" transfer case drop replace coil spring with a 3" lift spring keep spacer on add a control arms drop bracket (like from RR) replace lower control arm with adjustable arm replace front shock That's it - what's wrong or what have I missed

it seems JEEP comanche did have a 3.07 gears in 1988 2wd and Ford makes 8.8 with 3.27

I was looking at a DANA 44 last night and the tag had on it (at the beginning) 307 Now if I follow what i've heard 30/7=4.28 or 4.27 gears or like this add Have a matching set, 3.07 gears, lockrights front and rear, set up for factory spring or Spring over, has tie rod up front and extended trackbar bracket, includes all brakes, drums discs, etc. actually you're buying the lockright lockers, it is 3.07 gears This add is talking about a dana30 and 35 for $425 of a 91 JY - to bad I couldn't put that under my MJ Like another person writes: I'll have a 93 with 327 gear are they reading just the tag and he actually has a 4.56

I have come across a DANA44 w possi-lock of a Comanche (2x4) I have a DANA35 on my Comanche (4x4) Several questions. Will the DANA44 work in my MJ? Use the same drive shaft? What might the gear ration be in the 44 - for sure it is not going to be the same gear I have upfront I also read that only the 86 MJ metric ton came with a DANA44 stock?

The current cross member is on it's last roundup. The current one is now protected by skidplates but I'd still like to upgrade it to a more heavy duty version. I found that Rusty's make one for XJ http://rustysoffroad.com/mm5/merchant.m ... gory_Code= But does anyone know if someone makes one for a MJ or would the XJ work?

4x4 swap drive line length

Big shaft that brings up some of my own questions. I noticed that my drives haft is really large - bigger then what I have seen on Cherokee I run with. I saw a vendor tag on it so I know it is an after market add on. Are these better then others? Also when I finally go to a DANA44 can the driveshaft be shorten to fit? -
No power when starting on a hill

Would a 2.8 with a 5 speed offer me much more power? Would my transfer case match up? Would need to move over wiring? What else? Same year as mine but a 2wd -

If your a MJ owner you have to build your capability to handle problems and enhancement That's what owning an MJ is all about - I bought one so I could finally use my 4 year old mig welder -
No matter if you find no rust anywhere when you checkout the vehicle - you can count on having to do a restoration job on the rusted floor when you remove the carpeting. If buying a 2.5L then look for a gear ratio of 4.1 or 4.56 you will thank yourself later Replace the lower shock mount on the rear immediately with a axle universal mount $20 for the mounts and a little welding. Otherwise you'll be fighting bent mounting bolts every time you go out.

Heck with the over 40 club - how about over 60 club I thought I read or heard some where that doing both an add a leaf and longer shackles was a no no

My front bumper is nothing fancy but it is 100% functional and the welding was something I could handle Image Not Found

Lots of information and some bad choices maybe First I must admit that the 4Low did get me where I needed to go with no issues - so I guess I could stay in the 3.55 gear range and just live in Low off road - maybe do some things to increase power like fan conversion to electric At $800 (is that one axle or both) is more then I was hoping - I could buy a used Cherokee for parts with the right gears for that much and pickup an engine and transfer case as well My long range plan (maybe in a couple of years - unless it breaks sooner) was to get a Cherokee for parts with the 4.0 engine, 5sp and better DANA and gears Now that I know there is nothing wrong with my MJ maybe I'll address the other issue - more traction - Maybe I'll just put the Aussie in the front for now. I remember in another track before buying you MJ make sure you know what your getting into - I didn't but still love the truck. Learning and doing all of this mechanical work is great for me - being a college professor in computers this is definitely outside my normal endeavor. But I must remember to pick the recently welded part up with the hand that has the glove on it. Some reason I can't seem to remember that for more then two weeks before I forget again. Again thanks for everyone advice and help. -
Ok I have two choices - I have found a Comanche DANA 44 and a Explorer 8.8 All things being equal which would be better

I was afraid that it might be the 4cyl was not enough. Well I finding myself a DANA 44 rear end to replace my DANA 35. So I'll add re-gearing to 4.56. I assume replacing the gears requires special tools or experience? -

good idea engine 2.5 transmission 4 speed gears - I think 3.55 ties - 30x9.50 -
OK this is interesting. Took the MJ out the first time on a medium level trail and learned a lot about the jeep. What I learned: 1. The rear lower shock mounts are in the wrong place - moving them up off the axle 2. Skid plates for the transmission and transfer case are worth their effort 3. Rock sliders are also worth the effort Now the problem. After 5 hours I finally got to a point where I no longer need 4Low and switch to 4H. I was on a very slighjt hill and when I let the clutch out it felt like I had the parking break on and the engine would die. Even tried 2H and got the same response. It would work as long as I was on level ground. Switched back to 4Low and it works. The guys on the run with me suggested a vacuum leak - so I tracing that down. Any thoughts

I'm all most decided it does not matter - since it is best to rebuild the 25 before installing it and I think I want more power to the ground I'm leaning towards putting new 4.10's in the front and rear 4 speed, 2.5L running 30x9.5 but more then likely will go to 31x10.5 next - already have the clearance resolved used this chart Image Not Found

Lost out - the previous owner removed both cover plates and did not put the tags back on so I need another way to identify - seems like counting the number of wheel revolutions compared to drive shaft would tell me somehting?

Ok found a comanche dana 44 with a limited slip for $325 But how do I tell what gears I currently have

Interesting - that's why I turn to you - to much for one person to know Going to do a search and see what an upgrade involves

Thanks I'm ordering lockers and wanted to make sure before spending all that money Going with Aussie
