I am kind of in the same boat here out of work for a few months but no degree when I did find a full time job I lost it because I broke my hand and wrist 2 days before starting, now I'm back to house painting 2 days a week until the snow hits then unemployed again. I have been a house painter 15+ yrs and decided at the wrong time to change jobs. I wish this econemy would turn around so all of us out of workj could make ends meet, fortunately we have our jeeps to tinker with while out of work.

looks awesome so far, I wish I could weld.

MJ's going to welding shop Wednesday afternoon, hoping its all done by the weekend. My hand has healed fast been working on it a little got it ready for welders I am hpoing it costs less than $500.00 for all the welding but with my luck it will be more.

bribed some friends with beer and put the front end and doors back on, welding the frame Thursday (hopefully) but I might have to sell it might be getting booted from my bros house (douche bag gf sorry for the language) being out of work for the next couple weeks doesn't help either. I am selling a 1988 Suzuki Quadracer lt 250 and my XJ and a bunch of model cars/truck first, every thing I own will go before the MJ but its not much.

update I got a little drunk this past Saturday and kind of fell broke my fall with a closed fist on a cement floor, (was drunk before any crap about putting hand out instead), I broke my right hand, well shattered the knuckle broke the bone in 3 places, chipped the ring finger knuckle and fractured my wrist (I must have rolled my wrist when I flopped over) so needless to say this project is on hold until next spring, I was about to start a job next week house painting but now i am out for 10-14 weeks, not sure if surgery is needed yet, doc wants it to heal some to see.

8.8 conversion question
driverdave replied to driverdave's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
200 axle 200-400 locker 200 bearings/seals 125-200 new brakes 200-300 gears 200 new shafts This is all going to a shop to be done so add labor a couple hundred. I do not have the prices yet for all the parts but from looking around online this is about what it will cost me. So there it is a completely rebuilt axle. The time I am putting into fixing this I am not just going to the scrap yard and tossing used parts on, I want to build this so it lasts a long time before needing any major work (except engine, tranny, transfer case), Some of you just don't understand I hate doing things twice, if it comes off the frame it gets replaced thats the way I have always worked on cars and always will. I am not in a rush at all to finish this if it takes me 5 yrs it takes 5 yrs. I want it to come out nice and ready to go for years. -

a 44 built with gears and locker is a couple grand, and no I will not buy a 8 1/4 I know people that have them and they are junk. As for stock height I have stated a few times I'm going with a 3" lift with 32x11.50x15 ( already on stock height mj), the rear axle is being replaced with a heavier duty one weather I off road or not, (plus the roads around here are almost like off roading so many dang pot holes and crappy patch jobs) I have broken my 30 and 35 on my XJ already and didnt do much off roading with that. I knoiw people have their preference I have asked and a lot on here said 8.8 if I can't find a 44. The grand includes complete axle rebuild bearings, shafts, gears, locker, brakes and what ever else in on or in the axle. So ya a grand seems about what I would spend between parts and labor. I am not positive on final price until I do it. -

Thanks that link is very helpfull. I have been trying to locate a d44 but 15 junk yards around do not have one, so 8.8 is common to find so thats why I'm going with 8.8, if I can find a 44 when I'm ready to buy the axle I will get a 44 but other wise 8.8, also if I found an xj 44 that would go on my xj (restoring after MJ) -

That's correct. You essentially gave the rims less backspace, moving them further away from the body/axle. ok I get it now after a couple cups of coffee to wake up lol. -

now I'm getting more confused, on my XJ with my 32x11.50.15 the stock (wrangler) rims tires rubbed inside, I put in a 3/4 wheel spacer and no more rubbing. Alot of this is new to me I have read and seen enough pics but actually doing it is a different story. The rear axle I plan on sinking $500.00 to $1,000.00 dependeing on the locker I choose. -

ok this confuses me the 8.8 in narrower then the d35 I know that, but you said with an "8.8 I will need rims with less backspacing" wouldn't I need more backspacing to get the rim back towards where it should be, less backspacing will move it closer to the frame. Tire size will be 32x11.50x15 these tires are almost new so I'm using them (saving a few hundred) Plus I will not be doing any rough off roading no place around here just a lot of smooth dirt roads. Lifting will be done in either the Comanche or Grand Cherokee -

thanks Pete my point exactly maybe I should have said it this way from the start. As for a soa I do not want 5" of lift MASS it will not pass inspection, I am only asking about the 8.8 not lifting. -

my d35needs gears and leaf/shock mounts any ways I don't need to have it back in the truck until next summer so I can take my time rebuilding a 8.8 if I could find a dana 44 in the bone yard I will get that instead of the 8.8 but around here no one has a 44 8.8 are common. -

I need to replace the axle so what would you do for the same money go stock or heavy duty? And not all of us need a 200 foot lift to want dana 44's or 8.8's -
Last night my security light in my garage came on, there has been some car break ins around here lately, so any who I grabbed my baseball bat and went out back to look ( my back yard is thick woods and over groth, easy to hide), When I got to the bed of the MJ (beds flipped upside down) I heard a noise so I banged the bottom of the bed then I heard a grunt I was like WTF so I slowely moved the tail gate and almost $#!& myself, a family of 6 skunks making their house under my bed. There are 3 little ones look about 2-3 months old, well I got them to leave but a baby ran the wrong way and straight towards my open basement door, it almost made it to the door but then decided to run under the deck, so I decided to pull the trim boards from the deck and saw it hiding in the corner, I have cat food trail leading to the yard and my dog is freaking out when the skunk pops out. We used to have a pet skunk and had many living under the stairs and deck so I know how to get them out with out getting sprayed. I must move my bed now since they made a home there once they will keep digging and trying to get back under the bed. Why me why now I was going to sand blast today but now have to move stuff around and skunk proof it.

here are the fenders all painted came out ok in my mind, I noticed some scratches in the primer after I painted but oh well I have so much left to do a couple scratches will be fine. I do like the color some what by choice and some what because of the price of the sample paint, it's an off white and I like it just wish it was a whole lot cheaper.
-
Front fenders are painted 5 coats on each waiting for them to dry completely to see how they came out, no runs but some orange peel look in a couple spots. a wet sand and buff should help, so now as long as I work 40+ hrs this week I will be ordering the rest of the paint, I really want to get the frame welded and body painted before the snow hits,

ok where can I get those parts? -
ok here is a sample of the 1969 Spannaker White i'm going to use, this tiny sample cost me $24.00 so a gallon will be expensive. I will be spraying the test fender Monday because of a 90% chance of rain today.
