Yes, you are correct on all counts about performance, but with all that came a slightly higher price tag and a lot less AMC dealers across the country than the "big three", then when Chrysler bought Jeep they just kinda kept building them while they were putting together the Dakota because they sold moderately well, but they didn't like putting a pickup out there that didn't say "Dodge" on it's grille, so the death knell was sounded on the Comanche. Anybody feel free to correct me if I'm wrong....

I bought mine off E-bay 2 years ago. Guy was asking $2500 or make offer. I offered him $1500 and he accepted. 4 hour drive and I couldn't get any of my buddies with trailers to go ( everybody is busy when I need a favor! ) I mailed him a check, he mailed me the title, picked up historic tags and got one of my buds to ride along in my gr. cherokee. Dude wasnt even home, left the keys in the ignition. I took tools, a spare tire, all fluids. Truck had not been driven in awhile so after pumping up the tires and topping fluids, started the 4 hour trip home via the PA turnpike. Speedometer wasnt working so I called my bud who was following in my other Jeep and he said " Dude, your'e doing 75!" so I backed off. Made it home without incident. 2 years and about another $1500 later, I have my daily driver, my daughter got her license and kind of took over my grand. I have wanted a Comanche since I first saw ads for it in 1986, but marriage, kids, etc. always came first, so I waited, and now I have one. 1987 Laredo shortbed 4.0 auto 4x4. One of the first things I did was get rid of the vacuum motor on the front axle and install a posi-lock, works great. Mechanically I have it sound, now comes the body work, not my favorite thing. Hurray!! I finally got an avatar pic to load up, now if I could just figure out how to get pics to show in postings...

Need help with ball joints
kellyj replied to pitbull4x4's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I changed the ball joints in my 87 MJ last year. It seems most parts suppliers want to sell you ones with snap rings, mine doesn't have snap rings, just pressed in. Tough job. Used a remover shaped like a c-clamp with a 2 foot 1/2" drive breaker bar with a piece of pipe on the handle for extra leverage. I can't remember top or bottom first, but it wasn't fun. Moog seems like the only manufacturer that makes the snap ringless ones for MJs, and they werent cheap, something like $70 per side. -
tranny/torque converter problems
kellyj replied to Lenard's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I installed a new tps over the weekend and so far so good. Ran a check on the magnetic sensor on the crank and it checks out ( thankfully, as it is in a tough spot to change! ) tps was the adjustable type, .8 volts is the correct setting with it connected and the key on, testing the pigtail with the flat connector. I'll let ya'll know if it acts up again. -
tranny/torque converter problems
kellyj replied to Lenard's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Unfortunately no tach. I have a feeling the tps needs to be replaced, gonna try that first. When this happened 6 months ago, took it to a shop and they drove it for 2 days and of course, it never acted up so they couldn't find anything to fix. When it happens and the engine rpms increase, just feels like no power going to the trans, but I could be wrong. Also have to remember its 22 years old! -
tranny/torque converter problems
kellyj replied to Lenard's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm having the exact same problem, just happened yesterday for the first time in 6 months. 1987 MJ 4.0 4x4. My fluid level has not been low, looks good. Happens when warm, all of the sudden engine roars and feels like it is jumping into a lower gear. Any clues? -
What's so great about a Comanche?
kellyj replied to bilgamesh's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Here in the Peoples Republic of Maryland an historic vehicle is over 20 years of age and is for parades, tours, etc. and "occasional" transportation. I've had more than one deputy tell me that they don't pay a bit of attention to vehicles with these plates unless you are doing something stupid or the vehicle is in such bad condition that it doesn't look safe or is posing a hazard, things which they would stop a car for anyway. Also, you can't register or get these plates unless you already have another vehicle with regular plates ( i.e., your "everyday" transportation ) I have a grand cherokee and a street bike, so it's no problem keeping it mixed what I drive everyday. -
What's so great about a Comanche?
kellyj replied to bilgamesh's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
What isn't great about a Comanche??? My favorite thing is that it is unique, turns heads because you don't see them anymore. I have had several people walk up to me in parking lots and just start talking Jeeps because they say "wow, haven't seen one of those in a long time!" They are tough, good looking, fairly easy to work on, and mine takes me wherever I want to go. If Chrysler were to announce that they were going to produce an anniversary model MJ ( I know, I know, they wouldn't be as tough as the originals) I'd be the first to sign up for one! The nice thing though is that there weren't a billion different cab styles produced, I mean sure, a few minor things after Chrysler took over on the inside, but the major stuff ( doors, fenders, etc.) all the same, and the fact that the cab is same as the old Cherokees makes replacing a lot of parts even simpler. But the best thing is that my MJ, at 21 years old, can use historic tags and that means no inspections and cheap insurance! -
Ok, I guess I'm just dense or missing it somewhere, but how exactly do we order shirts, decals, etc.?
