looks like it had some front end damage. so what? lol it's very similar to mine, including the 4:10s and the dents. http://fortcollins.craigslist.org/cto/5189145726.html

o2 sensor pulled out of harness (mangled). now no start
shawn replied to shawn's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
one of these days I'm going to have to send you a check for all the money that you've saved me :) 30 amp ignition fuse! maybe it blew when the sensor connector was yanked out. either way it's out of the bush and back on the road so a big thank you. no check-engine light so maybe i got lucky with the sequence putting it back together - it goes right into the main wiring harness so replacing that end isn't an option - just gonna wire it and tape it as best as possible and tuck it up up up. :) -
this was happening to me until the other day. turned out to be Vehical Speed Sensor. here's the thread if you like. scroll down. http://comancheclub.com/topic/47164-stalls-when-pulling-up-to-stop-sign-otherwise-runs-and-idles-fine/

i doubt this post is going to help anyone but here's my newest electrical weirdness. a branch grabbed the connector that comes from the o2 sensor and pulled it apart. i found this out while wheeling alone ( again). the part that goes from the sensor seems fine. the other end of the connector is a 4 pin affair and since the colours don't match there isnt a way to tell how they connect up again ( other that that the four wires are still going through a little rubber boot/guide that goes into the connector, so they do have to go in a certain order). i thought i tried them in every combination possible but still it just cranks. ( of course this kind of thing always happens in a place that no tow truck can get to). i dint think to check the codes before i left but that's the first thing i will do tomorrow. while i was under there i noticed a place that looked like it should have a sensor but there was no wire going to it -- it looked like a freeze-plug near the front of the block. i just looked at the wifes 95 xj and there is a wire going to hers so i don't know if that could have any bearing on the situ or not , - i didnt see a wire hanging or anything that looked like it belonged there on my mj (91). it's a puzzler that i'd just as soon let someone else ( who deals well with electrical) deal with but since i ended up leaving it in the semi-rural bush for the night loaded with personal goodies, i just thought i'd throw this up here and see if there are any thoughts. ty i a.

This turned out to be one of the best pieces of advice ever. (thank you hornbrod). strangely enough, when i went to the parts store and picked it up i removed mine in the parking lot but when i got the new one i wasnt positive it was right so i figured that i'd just throw the old one back in and change them at home. on the way home it ran perfectly and didnt do the thing it had done for many years at the red light. when i was down there i noticed the wiring harness was quite rough and looked melted in one spot so will be changing that out asap. i think wiggling the harness and/or the sensor itself changed everything . i still have the new sensor and will just keep it in the truck and change it at the first sing of the problem showing up again. thank you again . i would have not thought of that on my own and i will pay more attention to the codes from now on.

i thought i had it with the new tps but sadly it seems to have had no real effect. When i fired it up after the new sensor went in it idled high (1500) for a minute then immediately went back to normal and ran and idled perfectly -- until i went to stop fairly quickly. same symptom: idle drops right down to almost nothing and sometimes dies completely.

stock gear ratios for '86 2.8 5spd 4x4?
shawn replied to shawn's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
That's about half and half reporting 4:10s. Maybe i'd better get back out there and have a second look at it. -
stock gear ratios for '86 2.8 5spd 4x4?
shawn replied to shawn's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
i'd love to find that thread. i always look for the 4 cyl xj's and mj's now for the diffs but this is the first 2.8 ive seen. woulda thought they would have given them at least 4:10s. -
just wondering if anyone would know off-hand what would be the gears most likely found in a truck like this one. it's a hundred dollar special but doesn't really have anything nice about it other than the interior.

everything is beautiful , including the gears and long-arms, but sadly -- the grill is upside down.

its so inconsistent i cannot tell what's triggering it but the one consistency is that when i pull up to a red light or stop sign the idle drops right down to 100 or it just stalls.but yet at all other times it idles perfectly . now a new motor has just been swapped-in and its doing the exact same thing - only a little worse. if I'm sitting still and put the brake on the idle doesnt change - but i have noticed this time that if I'm driving along and put in the clutch like I'm going to get ready to stop it will drop right down to 100 rpm for a second or 2, then go back up to normal idle. like i said it seems a bit worse after the swap and sometimes the only way to avoid stalling at stop signs ( especially ones that are approached heading down-hill) are to put the clutch in way earlier than i normally would and idly /coast up to the stop-line. I'm baffled once again ... thanks for reading. :)

blows blue smoke after coming down a long hill. '91 4.0
shawn replied to shawn's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
thank you gentlemen. i did clean that out last month and there was oil coming through into the airbox. this motor runs great like i said, but it does have a fairly bad rear main leak as well as leaking from the front of the motor too. the odometer was stopped at 300,000 when i got it years and years ago and i haven't been that nice to it. A guy on the island has a motor with 100000 km's on it that he wants 500 obo for so i am considering that. my only worry is i would hate to put in a different engine and not have it run as great as this one has. there's also a 94 xj for sale near me that runs well for $250 and have considered picking it up just for the head.( and a few miscellaneous parts that i don't really need.)
