  1. this is somewhat related to my other tech post. I'm still wondering what would b involved in putting the auto (like from the '92 ltd) into the truck? it always worked great and already has the full time t-case on it. -- i bought that cupholder 4 a reason -lol.
  2. thanx guys - 4 the very intelligent help. and i will do just that sometime today so i will know 4 sure what I'm dealing with. what i will do about it I'm not so sure yet.------the mind reels.
  3. eagle - i think u hit the nail on the head - i had heard that the rear axle was rebuilt but it never occurrred to me that it would b with a different ratio.  -------nothing in that guys CL ad was true and i was blindsided. (live and learn i guess). will look for that tag on the front axle in the morning. as it stands now i have a great 2 wheel drive truck - but thats not going to get me to the alpines. it seemed to be dragging its rear wheels when in 4x4 and even when in nuetral coasting it would come to a fairly sudden stop.
  4. it had not occurred to me (ever) that they may not b the same ratio. but it does make perfect sense judging by the way it was behaving. - my bad - really baaaaaaaad. will see what i can do about making lemonaid after the weekend ------ any other thoughts ?
  5. so i by this '91 elininator - no front ds - now i have 1 in and it fits and is a good length - when i put it in 4 wheel it feels like the whole driveline is binding up and when it is rolling (even in neutral) it comes to a stop quickly. -t- case hooped ? -been a great truck in 2 wheel drive but this is disappointing. --
  6. ya thanx -corry - the wagoneer was an auto -do u think that means that the shaft is too long 4 the 5spd set -up ?
  7. yes i now think its possible that the t-case is hooped. i have two comanche 4x4 parts trucks available but I'm not a mechanic. i've been driving this one 4 a month or so with no front shaft and its been great but laast night i had to really jam the shaft in (it seemed like a very tight fit - and it came off a wagoneer xj-should be the same - right.-i took it 4 a small spin in lot next door -semed like everything was binding. going out side in a bit to re n re the thing and try again. ---and yes -autos work better 4 my driving style hereand its what i wanted and the full-time was a treat to have in the ltd.----------on a side note -i can't get those little rubber keepers for the linkage from napa ---and the pld ones won't keep linkage together.
  8. just typing out loud here , - but here's what i would like: when i bought my mj i was hoping to get an auto and werent any around so got the 5 spd. was just musing w/my parts guy and wondered if it would be easy to change it to auto with a full time t-case? the system like that was a pleasure to have in my xj ltd when i got this mj there was no front shaft in it and now i am wondering if there was more to the story than -"my uncle lent the shaft to a buddy" if i have to change t-case anyway maybe i can shove a auto/full-time setup into it. any help greatly appreciated.
  9. along those lines , what about the front shaft? i finally got 1 today, it seemed i had to jam it in and at sundown i only had time to go about 100' in front of house , but there seemed to be huge binding issues throughout drivetrain when engaged ( by me crawling under and engaging the shift lever) !!!????!!
  10. was just quoted over 1000 $ for cluth and slave re n re. I'm not getting any chatter or slipping and the slave is internal so mechanic says do clutch while ur there --- but over a grand !!! his shop rate is 75$/hr but the parts are expensive. -lookin 4 ideas 4 options. ty to any and all who reply.
