  1. I hadn't thought about using it for a gas tank skid plate. That's something I've needed for quite a while. :hmm: All the CJs, YJs, TJs, etc. seem to run tube fenders anymore. I've always liked them, but wanted to build something that didn't look the same as everybody else's. I'll have to credit Ron with the idea to recess the nutserts. I was a little disappointed after I installed them that they didn't sit flush. I was really attempting to distribute any forces across as large of an area as possible. I think recessing them should help with that. Yes, we should get together some time. I'm glad you didn't sell your's. I really wanted to see it in person. June will probably be pretty busy for me. I think the next trip I'm going to be able to make is Trail Jam the week of July 8th. Pretty much all my free time has been spent trying to finish this enough to wheel it that week. After that our club has a run to the Fortune Creek area August 17/18 and we are going to Moab the week of September 30th. I know my summer will probably get busier after Trail Jam when I talk to friends and see what other trips are coming up. Willy
  2. It is their 20 ton HD finger brake kit. The tube bender is from Rogue Fabrication. It uses an 8 ton air/hydraulic ram. Yes, the fenders will get filled in. I am thinking about filling in the top and bottom. Otherwise they would just fill up with mud and other junk. Willy
  3. Because everybody else does it that way. I also wanted to try to match the style of the rock sliders and bed sliders. Willy
  4. Jeep Tubes makes an MJ/XJ tube fender kit. So far I think they are the only company I've seen make XJ/MJ tube fenders. Willy
  5. Another tool purchase I'm going to have to somehow find room for. The SWAG finger press brake. This should come in handy for the next couple of projects. Willy
  6. To get some practice with the tube bender I decided to work on something fairly simple. Time for some front tube fenders. Started with some fender skins I picked up a while back just for this project. Attempting to position and balance all the pieces. This would have been much easier if I just had eight hands. Driver side tacked together. The pieces for the passenger side. Passenger side tacked together. Willy
  7. Thanks. Here are a few more mounted before paint. I ended up drilling the mounting holes larger than the face of the nutserts. That way the nutserts will be recessed and the sliders will sit flush against the bed side. This should take care of any future problems I have with straight tube. :D Willy
  8. Finished welding the rock sliders. Cleaning them and getting ready for paint. Willy
  9. I just came across two MJs with bench seats at the Tacoma Pick 'n Pull this past weekend. I didn't look at them too closely since I wasn't looking for seats. Might be something to consider if you still really want a bench. Willy
  10. That is great to hear. I can't even imagine what it would be like to sell that after all the work you put into it. I'm glad too. Was gonna go crazy on a jk or comando. Instead keep this and build a mild wheelr, well kinda expedition grand I think...or something. I want something I could DD and let Kate drive anytime. So thinking IFS grand with quadradrive so no lockers. So should drive great and still handle mellow trails, some snow, and groceries. Booooo on the IFS - unless you are building a KOH car. :thwak: WJ or ZJ only. I wouldn't mind building a WJ. The prices are reasonable, they are great on the street for daily driving, they are really good for mild wheeling, still fairly simple suspension, etc., and plenty of aftermarket support. I just can't even begin to make myself even consider anything with IFS that I plan to engage the transfer case in. Willy
  11. Thank goodness you tease. :P Willy
  12. Ron kept pretty busy pulling dents. He's been a huge help with a lot of the body work. While I finished welding the bed sliders. Willy
  13. My friend, Ron, came over yesterday to lend a hand and do some body work. We started with putting the new bumper on. Willy
  14. Started the weekend off picking up some new doors. Willy
  15. I haven't thought about standing on them. I'm not sure if they are that strong. I designed them with side impacts in mind to try to help distribute the force across as much sheet metal as possible. Not sure if I'd trust them to much vertical loading like that. Willy
  16. Prior to this year it was all angle grinder or chop saw. Since January a lot of it has been this. :D Image Not Found Willy
  17. A heavy delivery was waiting when I got home yesterday. Now time for even more fun with tubes. Willy
  18. I knew the sliders would want to warp while finish welding. So I used a few scrap aluminum spacers and some clamps to put some reverse tension on it. This also had the additional benefit of preventing the bench top from completely lighting on fire. Apparently it worked. Willy
  19. They're not exactly my favorite either, but I knew I needed something to protect this bed after beating the other one to hell. In this case protection won out over style. I'm hoping once I get the rear fenders done it may help tie everything together. Thanks, I always try to come up with something different. Willy
  20. Finished welding in the new cross member and rear bed mounts. With paint. Willy
  21. I wanted to try to preserve the sheet metal on this bed as much as possible, so I built some bed sliders to help battle all the trees we have around here. I added nutserts to hold them in place. I was a little disappointed how far these stick out. I didn't realize they wouldn't mount flush against the metal. So be it. We'll see how they hold up. Willy
  22. Tacked together the passenger side rock slider stand offs. These are the nut plates I built for the rear bumper. Willy
  23. After that I chopped up some tube for my rock sliders. Pretty much since I built the sliders I wished I had added stand offs to help protect the cab and body a little better. Now I'm taking the time to do it. The ends for the stand offs and notched supports for both sides. Driver's side clamped in place. Ends tacked on. Willy
  24. I ran out of shielding gas 10 minutes into my weekend....so my plans changed. :fs1: I was able to paint the bumper. Willy
