Alright I have the 2.5L TBI in my 88 MJ 2wd Auto. When ever I get off the high way and come to a complete stop that dang oil light will flicker and the rig starts to shake more and almost stall out. Any one have any ideas as to what that may be all about? Its bad enough that it runs rough when sitting still and I have to apply some gas to smooth it out. Cooling system. I bought a radiator off a guy from here and its a closed system appearently. Now I forget who it was but i'm very thankful he was able to help. Question is, is that over flow tank under pressure at all? Right now its not hooked up. The new radiator is one out of a 4.0 so I just have connects for upper and lower hose, tranny oil cooler and what looks like where a sensor would go but its plugged up. My plan was to get a new over flow tank since I need a new one and put together some fittings that will screw into that port. My worry is that if I do that then the over flow tank will have pressure going to it and eventually blowing it up or the at least the top off. So thoughts comments? I really don't like running with no over flow tank not to mention its annoying to pop a hose off to add fluid and what not. Also for the people who still have the base cluster with the lights. What is that light at the bottom left hand side? The one that is below the temp light.

cold air intake pics?
Mobius1 replied to undercoverwalrus's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Any one have pics of one on the 2.5L? Also and I don't mean to be the one to sound like a know it all, its actually called a Short Ram intake. I had one on my car unti I upgraded to a cold air intake. with the SRI you'll see a lil gain with the good old butt dyno but going with gains from the car club they say it helps a lot with more air going in thus more power and tourqe, not a lot like you would see with a CAI but a gain is a gain and in my mind every little bit will help. -

If you are reffering to the website I directed you to I do apologize. I figured at the least they would do what they did for me and direct me to a few places that either had it stock or would know a person that could do it for ya for cheap. Sorry and if I find something to help i'll let you know, good luck. -
lol alright I don't mena to laugh at you but I should have mentioned this...he just put it loosely together so I know what it looked like before I decide to purchase it thats all. Guy had it on his S-10..i think 80s/early 90s is what he said his truck was.

Well I fianlly found a roll bar for my 88 MJ short bed and now I just have to arrange buying it and installing it. Any concerns or potential problems I may run into with installing the rollbar? or if you just have some helpful tips please share. Hope the pics help to give you an idea of what it looks like and what it'll look like in the bed of the MJ.

if you go to http://moparpartsamerica.com and type that part number in they offer it at 125 bucks. So it might be worth it to go with that should you not feel the need to fab anything up your self. -
Alright been pricing and looking at things all over. My questions are, how big can you go before its just useless to run the 2.5L. Meaning with a lift and over sized tires. Also my 2.5L 2wd will be 4wd before the end of 2008 and was wondering how well they perform 4x4 wise with just normal size tires (i'm running 30'' BFG A/T). If thats not clear try this, how well does the 2.5L do in a 4x4 MJ vs a 2wd MJ? I'm not sure how long it'll be until I do a motor swap if at all. So if you will, please give me as many pros and cons to each situation. If needed the tranny will still remain automatic and as for how big I was planning on going I hadn't thought about it just thought I would see who has done what and why.

Is there anything special I have to order or get or need to know when laying new brake lines for the rear end starting from the brake booster all the way back? My plan was just to g oto Autozone and buy how ever long length of tubing I needed along with the tool for sharp bends and go from there. I thought I had read in a past post about someone havign to special order something which I didn't understand when its just simple brake line tubing and you just connect accordingly...if i'm wrong or have it backwards please someone let me know. If needed the Truck is a 88 Pioneer 2WD 2.5L Automatic, tranny is unknow but it has overdrive and axle is a Dana 35c.

Vents working, then no HEAT aaahh
Mobius1 replied to TajMan's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
So if I have read all this correctly, if the bumper is hit on the right side (passenger side) enough to dent it good then that vac ball could be toast thus making the heat not really work? My 88 2.5 MJ has luke warm heat on bylevel but when I put it on "Heat" it comes out cold? So whats up with that? Also with that picture of the engone bay is it possibe for someone to post one of the 2.5L bay without a/c because mine looks nothing like that...not even close. I'm only concerned about having realy heat because my wife will be driving it for the most part while i'm gone for basic training and would like to get that fixed on my own if possible along with other things. -
yeah, I'm sorry its more going to be for the lights and whatnot, not for a roll cage... but i havent actualy seen the thing so I'm not sure how heavy duty it is or anything
-
I had someone offer to give me a rollbar from their S10 for $75 bucks, but they don't have a picture to show me does anyone think it would work, and how would I install it? (i.e. screw it in or weld it?)
-
Ok I just got my 88 MJ stolen tonight and now I need to know how to install a kill switch for the thing. Its a 2.5L automatic. Yes I got it back but the cops wanted to take in for printing so they can try and catch these guys. I guess its been a bit of a problem here in Fenton or they've just been beggin for an excuse to use the new toys they have.

What is this on my axel/Differential
Mobius1 replied to Mobius1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
how would I know what gears I have? How would I go about looking for any indication of what the gears are? -
aside from having to put a new midpipe on (past owner removed cat and the welding had failed started running open header) everything exhaust is pretty sound.
-
well its not quite due for an oil change since I don't drive it enough. I drive it like maybe 2 times a week and thats just because my car is low on gas and I hadn't gotten paid yet. Whats wrong with fram oil filters by the way? I know I have the aerodynamics of a barn but when i'm getting passed by a wrangler that is the same age and motor I start to get a bit annoyed. Well unless some one has something else to add to this thread that has not been mentioned its starting to sound like we are beating a dead horse. Thanks for all the input people, let ya know how goes in a week or two.
-
Well all in in all its great just on the highway if I need to speed up, going up any sort of hill or there is a slight breeze i've got nothing. Only way I get anything is if I floor it and it drops a gear to speed up. Also its done this 4 times already. When I get done driving on the highway and i'm comming to a stop or I am stopped the Oil light comes on and some times it'll flicker but goes away when i let my foot off the brake and start going....whats up with that?

What is this on my axel/Differential
Mobius1 replied to Mobius1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I believe that question was directed to me. Yes but even though it doesn't sound like it I do have another vechical which is used 98% of the time. Yeah its probably not advised and unsafe but when you have no money to take it to people fix the problem these are things that "poor" (term used loosely because I am lucky to have a home and a daily driver and such) people do to get by until a later time to try and fix the problem. -
Thats fine, at the very least it'll have a bit more kick around town and i'll have the feeling that I accomplished something before I left for basic. :D

What is this on my axel/Differential
Mobius1 replied to Mobius1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Oh well if thats what it is the thing is a bit useless at the moment since I have no rear brakes..things aren't even hooked up...I couldn't find where in the line it was leaking back at the end of summer so for the time being they are disconnected. -
Just as the title says. I was looking around waiting for my wife to get off work and noticed this. What in the world is that thing and what does it do?? Also where that metal shaft connects to the diff into that plastic piece is split. Should I bother with it or just leave it be? Truck is a 88 Pioneer automatic 2wd with the 2.5L and the axel is a D35c....If I remember correctly.
-
Its an 88 Pioneer. Well so far everyone has mentioned everything I had thought of a side from re-gearing it which I won't be around to do that or have the money. Oh well i'll just do that small stuff, CAI and TB spacer and see where it goes from there.
-
Its and Auto but I have no clue what tranny it is. I guess if there is a certain spot to look I can try and look it up real quick. Also was reading another post and they had mentioned blue smoke comming out the exhaust...what does that mean?? The CAI that was mentioned as a possible upgrade (cold air intake), where on earth would I pick something up for the MJ or is one of those make it your self type of thing?
-
Has no cats, new plugs and wires 2 months ago and cap still looked brand new since when I got it that was the cleanest thing under the hood. As far as I know they are the stock tire size but I really wouldn't know what that is since i've only had the truck several months now (Tire size P235/75R15).

I'm leaving for the Air Force in January and i'm trying to complete a thing or two on the MJ before I leave. The only thing I have yet to do is put my new rear bumper on and when I tried to do it I snapped the heads off two of the bolts. So now i'm really screwed and cash flow to have a shop do it is not available. So I come to you guys to see if someone might be able to help me personally or at least know of a place that will do it for extreamly cheap. I have tons of free time now since I got laid off work so reply back on here or PM me.

I don't have the money for a engine swap and who knows how long that will be. So for the time being what mods can be done to the 2.5L so it'll run better, stronger and not be so sluggish on the highway? Also is there supposed to be a rear sway-bar on these trucks? Noticed today in my car that a few of the smaller trucks I was passing had a rear sway-bar and when I got home noticed my MJ does not. If it helps for any further comments and such its a 88 short bed 2wd.
