This may not belong in Tech, but:

I'm thinking of replacing everything from the cat to the exhaust tip, as I may have mucked up the cat with a healthy dose of leaded fuel  and the muffler has a hole in it (and wasn't installed very well anyway). The remaining pipe shows the effects of the 300K miles that the MJ has accumulated.

Any recommendations (brand or source) for replacement cat and muffler? Any idea what I should expect to pay?

Should I look for a stock pipe, or just have fresh piping built by the local muffler shop. They do good but pricey work. If so, what size to maintain appropriate back pressure?

Thanks.

Is this for a 4.0L or a 2.5L? The 4.0L euns best with a stock 2-1/4" tailpipe. The exhaust pipe is 2-1/2" into the cat, the cat is 2-1/2" and then the connector necks down to 2-1/4" between the cat and the muffler.

I have been very happy with Catco brand direct-fit converters from Summit racing. Since I bought my last one Summit has added another brand that's a couple of bucks cheaper, but I'd still go with a catco just because I know they work.

For everything else, I buy from Auto Zone. Their mufflers have a lifetime warranty, and their pipes are as good as anything other than a custom-bent, stainless steel mega-dollar system.

Oops. 4.0. I'd better put some detail in my sigline I guess.

That's all real helpful! Thanks mucho!

Edit: Just checked Summit and they no longer list Catco. Now it's Dynomax.

Found Catco elsewhere, but noticed that a lot of the converters offered to fit the MJ are "not to be used on Kalifornistan registered vehicles."

Catco doesn't say, so I guess I need to dig deeper.

WTF?

If anyone in Ca. is looking for a complete, bolt-it-all-in exhaust system for a SWB 2.5 let me know. It passed a smog test last year.

Free, of course. 8)

Sure they do.

But unless I'm reading it wrong, that's only for the I4 and the V6, not the 4.0L. :dunno:

You're right, it says it fits the 4-banger. However, it's the one with the 2-1/2" inlet, 2-1/4" outlet, and flanged inlet. And 4029 strikes a chord as being the number I've been buying. I thought I still had a box in the basement, but I just looked and it's not there so I'll have to trust the memory.

Here we go -- there's another screen showing all applications for that number:

Great, thanks!

I zeroed in on the 4029 from another website, so that looks right, and it's a 50-state compliant cat, so that works for me. :clapping:

Just changed all my exhaust 2 days ago--a chuck of platinum broke loose and plugged the cat. I went with a 2.5" universal cat( with adapters of course) to a 2.5" "Cherry Bomb turbo" muffler and into a short 2.5" tailpipe with a turn down--It sounds MEAN and its got a lot more nads now! jamminz.gif
