PRLJEEP Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 I heard there is a lot of re-mounting brackets... Is it a better axle than the D35???
Pete M Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 You'll need to move the leaf perches. Yes, the early 8.25 is better, just not by a whole lot. The later (97+ I think) 8.25 is an excellent upgrade. An XJ/MJ dana 44 is even better, though can be harder to find and older (probably needs seals and stuff). A ford 8.8 from an Explorer is a significant upgrade and 96+ have disks.
comancheon33 Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 I put a 99 8.25 with 29 spline axles in my 91. I have abused it with 33 inch boggers and have had no breakage issues yet. I would do it again, no complaints here.
pingpong Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 The only down side to the 8.25 axle beside only being marginally stronger then the d35 is the gearing only goes to 4.56 and you are limited on your choice of lockers :brows: To me the 8.8 is a far supperior swap then even a d44. The only advantage the d44 has over a 96 or newer 8.8 is gear selection. If you never plan on going deeper then 4.88 you are golden with a 8.8. Also with the 8.8 you get 31 spline axles, and disc brakes :D
