Mattpioneer
What is the latest model 4.0 that i can put in my 88 pioneer and it fit?
Eagle
What do you mean by "fit"? Physically, the 4.0L engine is the same block right up to the end of Cherokee production in 2001, and another year or two in the Wrangler. But if you want to just drop in another engine and keep your existing computer and wiring -- 1990 was the last year for the Renix injection/ignition system that's in your '88. Chrysler switched over to a completely different, ODB-I compliant system in 1991 that ran through 1996. 1997 was a sort of hybrid, mostly ODB-II compliant system, and then in 1998 they brought in a totally different system in the Cherokee that was used up until the end. Mattpioneer
so as long as i change the injection/ ignition over, i could use a new model
mvusse
Not quite. You'd need the computer too.

mvusse
Just got back from the Dave Worshil's in Canton, OH. For all parts to do a Renix 4.0 to a 4,0 HO swap they would want $350 exchange, and you there to point out exactly what all you need. They are more Ford/GM people and do not know AMC and Chrysler too well. They do have 2 91 and a 93 XJ, as well as a 95 ZJ with the 4.0 HO.

Eagle I beleive you can use a HO block with the renix system instead of changing it out. That is unless the 92 block I have in my 88 comanche is not a HO. mvusse
Davey's Jeeps in Salem, OH wants $650 for 4.0 HO engine complete with wiring and computer. No exchange of the old one needed. So far that averages out to $500.
Mattpioneer
so i don't understand just right. i couldnt take a new engine and use my old stuff
mvusse
Depends on why you are replacing it. If you want the higher HP of the HO engine, everything's got to go. It uses a different computer, different wiring harness, different ignition system and different sensors. Or so I'm told. If you're just replacing it because it is old, the block is the same. But in that case, why not rebuild what you have?
