86 5spd Tranny spec

Recommended Posts

which 5 speed was behind an 86 2.8, puke or aisin?

Aisen Warner AX 5 manual stransmission. the 4 speed was the same, just given the designation AX 4. it's identical to the 5 speed.

an AX15 is not interchangeable with the AX5 nor is a puke. the AX15 was available with a 60 degree bellhousing, but only from late 80's dodge dakota's.

The T-5 and T-4 chevy transmissions have also been known to pop up in comanches and cherokees...late 86 through early 88 were the only years that's been known to happen. it's debateable whether this is true or not (from some standpoints) but I've seen a few and here's the scoop;

running out of AX5's and AX4's, Jeep decided to substitute them with T-5 and T-4 when necessary.

The ratios are slightly different, yes, but that's insignificant.

The Ax-5 was used behind the 2.5 4cyl, the 2.8 V6, and the 2.1 Turbo Diesel. It's a light-duty transmission and it couldn't handle the power of a 4.0.

The Ax-15 is a medium-duty transmission, and can handle a lot more. The gears I believe are slightly thicker, and the transmission itself is longer. The Ax-15 was put behind the 4.0 because the 4.0 would just burn up Ax-5s.

So yes, the Ax-15 is the better transmission, however the only way to get it behind a 2.5 or 2.8 is using a 93+ 4cyl dakota bellhousing (Dodge started putting the Ax-15 behind their 4cyls), and you'll be dealing with a lot of fabrication there. The Ax-5 can handle those two motors just fine.

And...

Ax-5

1st - 3.93

2nd - 2.33

3rd - 1.45

4th - 1

5th - 0.85

R - 4.74

Ax-15

1st - 3.83

2nd - 2.33

3rd - 1.44

4th - 1

5th - 0.79

R - 4.22

except he means the AX-15 can take the abuse of either motor...the AX-5 suffers even behind a 2.8 sometimes (if you abuse it)

I have an AX5 in the 3800 (my 86 comanche) which is powered by a 3.8 camaro motor...3800 camaro ~ 4.0 jeep motor (they're close in power) and I have been through one transmission with little abuse (but 270+++ miles on the tranny so... ). it's just not a heavy duty tranny.

was curious mainly for if it would be a high demand re-sale off a parts truck. thanks for the info.......

I'm picking up another comanche in less than a week...and I'll be selling the transmission out of it for a buck and a half, it's an AX5. if the trannies are in good shape, they're worth a bit of money.
