My 89 Comanche

I'm James. 33m in SE Ohio.

I've shuffled from sht box to sht box most of my life, due to high student loans.

Got my hands on this 1989 Comanche and I don't think I will ever let go! 

My best friend since I was growing up has this XJ that she has kept running since she was 17 and she's 35 now...

For years, she was telling me that these are the best shtboxes in the world, and I was always like... YAH OKAY...

but now I get it. I've owned so many crap cars and this one is worth keeping. 

 

It's a 1989 4.0 5 speed 4wd short bed, originally from Colorado, but I bought it in PA.

The bed is rhino lined, and the underside is lick-able... minus a few seals! 

It has the Peugeot BA10/5. Everyone talks about how they're terrible, but this one has 210000 and is likely on the original clutch and shifts just fine. It's the 3.07 gears and it gets 24.8 mpg if I am nice to it on the highway. It's on 33s with a 3" lift and the aligned is slightly wacked! I bet that mpg number will go up once I do all my pre-winter maintenance! 

 

I operate a small organic farm, I remove poison ivy and I work on pianos, so she does some work.

 

My eventual plan is to have an AX15 for when the Peugeot dies. It seems that the general consensus is get steeper gearing, but I like my 3.07s. 25mpg is very nice, and I don't really plan on doing too much off-roading. 

 

My plan is to put a bigger rear axle with calipers in the rear & lockers in the front and back. 

But currently I just need a new Rear main, a valve cover, an oil pan gasket, both pinion seals, and a transfer case input shaft seal. Then I can worry about the future. 

 

It would be cool to meet anyone else in SE Ohio who's into Jeeps and doesn't mind someone who wasn't raised with a mechanic in the family!
