Radio Comes on Late After Start

When starting my MJ in the cold the original OEM radio comes on after a delay.  The length of the delay seems to be proportionate to how cold it is.  Anything below 30 F creates a delayed start. If the weather is 50 or above there is no delay.
One below 20 F morning had a delay of around 5 minutes.

Any ideas what could cause this?

Do these use relays? I know cold can affect a wearing relay, I had a similar issue with a starter relay in mine, no crank when cold, but warm and no issue. I could arc the starter with a wrench to start no matter the temp. Good place to start, I suppose.

I would probably monitor the voltage to the radio when the situation occurs.  If the voltage comes up immediately but the delay is there, the problem would more likely be the radio itself.  I would monitor this voltage as close to the radio as you can get to, and for the ground connection to your meter I would do the same, probably that would be the metal case of the radio which I assume is connected to ground although I don't know that is always the case (no pun intended).

 

Alternatively, if you see the delay in the voltage itself, ie the voltage does not show up at first, and when it does the radio comes right on, then you should be able to rule out the radio and look elsewhere.
