moparmatt
which one is better, mild wheeling with some mud only going to sit 33probably no lockers. thanks for the input. mike Will it be a daily driver also? I know on my XJ the D35 3.55 was ok I drove around everyday and about every other weekend in the summer I did mild wheeling with some mud and some rocks, but I sat on 31s. Just about 90% of the Jeep people I know say that the limit to the D35 is a 31 inch tire. I carried axle shafts, and the tools to replace it in case if something did happen. I would wheel with the 8.25, IMO it is underrated, it can support a 33 and 35 with alloy shafts easily. Also with the the 8.25 if the shaft were to break you only need to carry one because the shafts are the same size. Just because it does not say Dana does not mean it is not crap. I am going to give the 8.25 a chance on my MJ. I just cannot find a D44.
JeepDew
if you want a dana 44, there is a guy on ebay selling them for 600.00 + 200 shipping, he is in Pennsylvania. was going to buy2 of them, but he would not budge on the price. since the XJ will be a DD also and only sitting on 33, I will give it a try. once I start hitting the trails, I will keep you posted on how its doing mike
Burls
Make sure you pick up a Mid 96-2001 8.25 because the axles are stronger with 29 spline as opposed to an early 8.25 which had 27 spline. The 27 spline is only about as strong as a Danna 35.

I have a 3.55 27 spline chryco rear layin here that I can't seem to give away, that needs a new yoke. still gotta grab the ebrake cables from it for my dana 35 rear in the cherokee, and the springs off it for some other projects. zjrog
I'm going to use a 8.25 in place of the Ford 7.5 in my Ranger project. Going to 4 link it after tax refund... Price was right, the axle was free, the coils were free and crossmember material has been free. Doubt I get link material and joints free though... I think the 8.25 is highly underated, the later models have 29 splines and are regarded in some circles as nearly as tough as a D44. Certainly an improvement over the D35 or my Ford 7.5... The 8.25 (Both versions) have a good stout case, larger axle tubes and a beefier housing. When speaking of the 27spl (1.18dia), this basically accounts for the increase in strength. The 29spl (1.21dia) offers even a bit more strength with its larger axle shafts and higher spline counts. Its also the preferred way to go.
