Would like opinions on issue I am seeing with the gas gague

Recommended Posts

I just replaced the fuel pump and sending unit.  Now at full it shows a half tank.  Seems to drop correctly as I use fuel, but not all that helpful to me as you can guess.

I had a hell of a time installing it since it was an emergency repair literally in a field.  What are the chances that I bound up the float with the sock, when I installed it vs. me screwing up and ordering the wrong pump/unit ?

The reason I ask is I am not thrilled with the idea of dropping the tank, but will if it was me screwing this up.  Just want opinions from people who have more experience than I do working with this stuff.  It was a first time repair for me.  I have already cleaned up my grounds, and am still considering adding an additional one to the tank ground via the bolt for the fuel filter as some of the howtos suggest, but have not done that yet..

I was also in the middle of changing out my instrument cluster at the time, and testing with both clusters show the same behavior, so I know it is not on the cluster end..

Jeez, just realized it might be dependent on the model and such.  Sorry about not enough info..

1986 Comanche  2.5L  180K miles..

Overall wiring in good shape

All common grounds shown in howtos have been cleaned up and redone.

No additional grounding has been added at this time yet however.

There are two sending unit styles. There’s the 23.5/18 gallon and 16 gallon sending unit. If you have an 86 2.5L, chances are you have the 16 gallon(23.5 and 16 gallon share the same tank architecture but the baffle for fuel filling is at different heights inside the tank) and you probably installed the 23.5/18 gallon sending unit. Which is why it’s stopping at half when full.
