clarkerussell
I posted this at Yahoo, but I've only gotten one response so far. I thought I'd try here: Yesterday I started noticing a knocking noise from my 1988 Comanche. It's a 4.0 w/ 5 speed (peugeot). Regardless, the knocking noise got REALLY bad this evening. Basically, it's coming from the Tranny/Clutch, not the engine. Here are the symptoms. Clicking noise that is RPM dependent, Goes away when the clutch is disengaged (pedal on the floor), it's VERY loud in gears 1,3, and 5. Gears 2 and 4 is noisy too, but not as bad. If I'm in 3rd gear, the clicking is TERRIBLE once I let off the gas. To me it sounds like some sort of flywheel bolt that's come loose, but I figured I'd ask the group for advice. Thanks in advance! Pete M
Pretty much the same group, but you may have to be patient with responses. Many members only check in every few days. So what was your reply? Is the fluid level topped off? Any trouble shifting the gears? Jeep on! --Pete
clarkerussell
Fluid is fine, No problems getting in gear. It only clicks when the clutch is out. It clicks marginally with the clutch out and the tranny in neutral. It's much worse in gear 1,3 and 5.. 2 and four are worse than neutral, but not as bad as the others... Pete M
I'm guessing the throwout bearing may have gone south. Jeep on! --Pete
clarkerussell
Assuming that's it, I basically need a new clutch at this point, right? Would now be the time to swap in that transfer case I've always wanted, or are can that be done in the future? Thanks. Clarke I'm guessing the throwout bearing may have gone south. Pete M
I'm *hardly* an expert on this so I hesitate giving anything beyond guesses. See if you can email Jim about this. carnuck@yahoo.com I'm surprised he hasn't responded yet on Yahoo, but maybe Yahoo didn't send your email. Yahoo does lots of screwy things for seemingly no particular reason. Jeep on! --Pete P.S.
